Prince George Cougars Draft Overview

Prince George Cougars

A team who really looked like they targeted competitive players, guys who add size and a winning mindset to their future line up. We really like some of the picks they made and how they filled needs in their prospect pool. Really targeted forwards and defenders after taking Taylor Gauthier last year in the first round, near the end they made some long shot picks on some late birthdays. They had a lot of 1997’s in their line up last year and are probably looking to retool, which something we think they did a great job of doing at this year’s draft.

1st Round Selection

Tyson Phare (18th Overall) – A highly competitive two-way player who really improved his tools last season. Skilled and can shoot, Phare shows good versatility and the ability to excel in all areas of the game. By far the most well rounded player taken in the draft. Phare has the potential to be a 60-70 point guy as well as someone who is used in all situations and excels in the two-way game.

Notable Picks

Stanley Cooley (62nd Overall) – Cooley is arguably one of the top guys coming out of Saskatchewan. He’s a skilled, deceptive playmaker whose offensive mindset is strong. He loves to have the puck on his stick and has the ability to take over from the perimeter in the O-zone. Cooley is overall a skilled offensive minded talent who has scoring potential at the next level.

Brody Gagno (113th Overall) – We were really happy with Brody’s improvements this past season. He’s found a way to be an effective two-way mobile defender who can also make things happen on the rush. His mobility and presence on the blue line has improved. He’s also added size to his game and is someone who if improvements continue to happen he could make the league at 16.

Gabriel Shipley (128th Overall) – Two-way defensive game with a right handed shot, Shipley isn’t the flashiest of players but is strong and steady. His defensive game standouts most but he is also able to makes in open ice. Fluid skater with good lateral movement and the ability to transition well. Shipley has depth defender potential but could really take off if his offensive tools come around.

Michael Hoekstra (172nd Overall) – A guy who came on late in the year, Hoekstra has a big frame but can also move. Power forward build but has quickness and two-way support to his game. A smart player who knows he has the advantage, loves to lean on guys and win battles through his size and strength. Hoesktra is a depth guy who if you look at PG’s team fits what they love to have, big, smart and responsible in all three zones.

Conclusion

Overall we feel it was a successful draft for PG, they didn’t come in with the highest pick or the most picks but found players who will make an impact at the WHL level. Haven’t heard a lot on Zach Michaelis but have heard he is skilled and will produce at the WHL level. Maxwell is a potential third line agitator but can really shoot the puck. If one of the late goalies pulls through too, it could be a strong class for Prince George.
