WHL Gameday Preview: Wednesday October 9th, 2019

DUBNetwork game of the night: Edmonton Oil Kings at Moose Jaw Warriors 7:00 PM Central Standard Time

The Edmonton Oil Kings head southeast to take on the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place for the first of four matchups between the two teams this season.

The Warriors head into the contest on a four-game win streak, with all four wins coming directly after their season-opening loss to Regina. It will be the team’s third game of a four-game homestand. It is also the first game of the season for the Warriors in which they are playing outside of their own division.

Also just announced last night, Braden Tracey has been sent back to the Warriors. It is unknown if he is fit to play yet, so his status for the night’s game is up in the air.

The Oil Kings, on the other hand, are playing their fourth game in six nights. It is also their fifth straight road game. During the road trip, the team has collected seven of a possible eight points. They will head home following the night’s action and play their next two at Rogers place. The team will be playing in their league-leading ninth game — only the Vancouver Giants can match that total.

Edmonton leads the Central Division by a single point over the Medicine Hat Tigers with both teams having played eight games already.

Centreman Ryder Korczak leads the Warriors in early season scoring with 10 points in five games. Right behind him is Carson Denome with eight points. For Edmonton, Riley Sawchuk and Josh Williams each have nine points over eight games. Wyatt McLeod has six assists to lead the Edmonton blue line, while Daemon Hunt has four assists to lead all Warriors defensemen.

The Warriors power play is clipping along at 20.8%, which is good for seventh in the Western Hockey League. Edmonton’s power play has been dismal to start the season at 13.3% (19th). Their penalty kill makes up for some of the lack of firepower with the man advantage, killing off 89.3% of their penalties (4th). Moose Jaw is slightly ahead of Edmonton with a 90.9% penalty kill rate (2nd).

Bailey Brkin has been outstanding for the Warriors since being picked up before the season began. He is 4-1-0-0 with a 1.66 goals-against average and .947 save percentage. Todd Scott has a 3-1-2-0 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.

In other WHL action:

Vancouver Giants (4-3-0-0) at Saskatoon Blades (3-3-0-1)

The Giants continue their East Division swing where they are 1-2-0-0. Their only win came at Winnipeg — a 4-0 shutout of the ICE. This will be the team’s fourth game of a seven-game road swing that culminates on October 19th when the team hosts Swift Current. The Blades’ last two games and three out of seven have required extra time to settle. The Blades are 2-0-0-1 in those contests.

Portland Winterhawks (3-3-0-0) at Swift Current Broncos (2-3-0-0)

Portland continues its adventure through the Central Division. Thus far, the team has been unable to win a game, scoring just six goals in the three games. They close out their road trip with games on Friday in Red Deer and Sunday afternoon in Edmonton. Swift Current has allowed the third-most goals in the WHL, despite playing just five games. This includes a lopsided loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers (10-1).

Everett Silvertips (3-2-0-0) at Victoria Royals (2-2-0-0)

In another tight race in the US Division, the Silvertips are the leaders of the pack based on points percentage in the early part of the 2019-2020 season (.600). They head north for their second meeting with the Royals. The last meeting saw Everett shut out Victoria 6-0. Gage Goncalves had four assists to lead the ‘Tips. Victoria has played just four games, the least of all teams in the WHL.
