Silvertips continue US Division dominance

The second meeting between these two powerhouse teams ended with the Everett Silvertips showing why they are the team to beat. The Silvertips continue US Division dominance with a 4-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks.

Special teams stay strong

With eight power-play opportunities in this game, both teams were tested, and the penalty kill units for both teams stood tall. While no special team goals took place, neither team allowed a goal while shorthanded, a feat that has not been easy against a strong Winterhawks penalty kill this season.

Ben Hemmerling afforded the Winterhawks the first chance on the power play as he headed to the box to serve a double major for a high-stick on Ryder Thompson.

Scoring consistency is key

Once the Silvertips began scoring, the goals came almost as if timed. Everett’s first three came with over nine minutes between each goal, and they seemed to be only gaining momentum. Hunter Campbell scored both the game-winner in the second period and the third-period empty-net goal for the Silvertips.

At least until Mason Mannek scored for the Winterhawks. After the goal by Mannek in the second period, it seemed as though fans might see a game similar to the last time these two teams met. That game took place on March 26 of this year was the type of close game many people love to see.

Though the Winterhawks had some great chances, the game never quite seemed to go their way and the Silvertips managed to capitalize on it.

Both goaltenders, Dustin Wolf for Everett and Dante Giannuzzi for Portland, made 33 saves in the game. However, as has been the trend this season, Wolf claimed victory for the Silvertips, allowing only one goal by the team in red. Giannuzzi kept the Winterhawks in the game as best he could against the impressive team out of Everett.

Looking forward

Through eight games this season, the Silvertips have suffered just one loss. They are leading the division in both goals scored (28) and goals allowed (6). Teams will have to be focused and hungry if they want to add on to Everett’s loss column.

These two teams, who sit in first and second place in the US Division, will face off once again on Tuesday, April 6, back at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Washington.
