Daily Dose of the Dub: Thunderbirds release Kaluski, Three suspensions handed out in WHL

Thunderbirds release Kaluski

The Seattle Thunderbirds have released 1999-born forward Jaxan Kaluski to meet the WHL overage limit. Kaluski got into just two games this year and was held pointless. With Kaluski released, The Thunderbirds now have Matthew Wedman, Andrej Kukuca and Conner Bruggen-Cate as their three overage players.

WHL hands out three suspensions

The WHL has handed out suspensions to Kamloops Blazers forward Ryley Appelt, Calgary Hitmen forward Adam Kydd and Regina Pats forward Logan Nijhoff.

Kydd is facing the longest suspension of the group as he was suspended four games for a check to the head against the Edmonton Oil Kings on October 12th. He missed the first of those games on Monday when the Hitmen played the Saskatoon Blades. He’ll be eligible to return to the Hitmen lineup on October 27th when the Hitmen head to Regina.

Appelt was handed a three-game suspension for a cross-checking major against the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday. He’ll miss Kamloops’ three-game homestand which starts tonight against the Swift Current Broncos and will be eligible to return to the lineup on October 25th in Victoria against the Royals.

Lastly, Nijhoff was handed a one-game suspension for a kneeing major against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday. He’ll miss Friday’s game against Lethbridge and be eligible to return on Saturday against the Red Deer Rebels.

Broncos add Ward to the roster for hometown debut

The Swift Current Broncos have added 2004-born forward Mathew Ward to their roster ahead of a match-up against Ward’s hometown Kamloops Blazers where he’s set to make his WHL debut. The Broncos selected Ward with the 14th overall pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. He’s played eight games with West Van Academy Prep this year and has recorded seven goals and nine assists.

Hitmen recall Funk from BCMML

The Calgary Hitmen have recalled 2003-born forward Zac Funk from the Okanagan Rockets. The move comes with the four-game suspension to Kydd as well as injuries to James Malm (day-to-day, lower body) and Tye Carriere (upper body, out indefinitely) depleting the forward group according to our Freddy Mayer. In four games with Okanagan, Funk has two goals. He’s also played one game with Calgary in which he was held pointless.

Oil Kings release Kuny from the active roster

The Edmonton Oil Kings have released forward Brendan Kuny from the active roster. In two games this season, the Camrose, Alberta native had one assist. He’s expected to report to the Drayton Valley Thunder of the AJHL.
