Former Wheat King Off To Dauphin

The Baron Thompson era in Brandon has come to an end.

Baron has committed to the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings’ for the upcoming 2019-20 campaign.

Thompson played the past three seasons with the Wheat Kings, where he suited up in 172 regular season games. His career-high was in the 2017-18 season when he put up 26 points. In all, Thompson had 50 points with Brandon (24G).

“I was excited that Dauphin was the first organization that got in touch with me,” said Thompson. “I went up to Dauphin and met Doug, Scott, and the billets that I’ll be staying with and I really enjoyed everything. It’s also nice that I’ll be close to Brandon still. My billets can come down and watch me and I can always go for a visit.”

“Baron is a kid that we think is going to be a really good leader in the room,” said Doug Hedley, Head Coach & General Manager. “He brings some energy on the ice and he’s a great skater with some great size. He’s going to give some of our players some space as well, which is great. We’re really looking forward to him helping the hockey club.”

Just like Westoba Place was a first-class facility, Baron is set to join a team that also offers a first-class facility.

Credit Union Place is one of the best facilities in the entire MJHL.

“Yeah, the team just re-did their locker room and it looks really nice,” said Thompson. “I had a lot of fun in Brandon and made a lot of new friends. With that being said, I’m really looking forward to working my way into Dauphin and starting fresh.”

Thompson is a player that you will immediately notice when he steps on the ice. The Lakeville, Minnesota native is 6’5 and he weighs in at 254 pounds. He’s also played in Dauphin previously. He was a member of the Wheat Kings’ playoff runs in 2017 and 2018 when they played at Credit Union Place.

Baron shares some insight into what you can expect from him.

“I’m a big guy, I like to be physical, but I also have the skill-set to hopefully put up some decent numbers this year,” said Thompson. “I’m also not afraid to scrap at times. Overall, I’m just a power forward who can get the puck on goal and make plays.”

Thompson is spending Monday to Thursday in the gym. He also hits the ice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as he prepares for his final junior hockey season, and first in the City of Sunshine.

“I’m just trying to well round myself and make myself the best hockey player I can be,” said Thompson.
