Warriors’ Mateychuk invited to Hockey Canada Summer Showcase

Moose Jaw Warriors’ defenceman Denton Mateychuk has been invited to Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team summer development camp, Hockey Canada announced Thursday.

Mateychuk will join 45 other players born in 2004 and later from around the Canadian Hockey League, the United States Hockey League, and the Canadian Junior A Hockey League in Tsuut’ina Nation, AB near Calgary starting July 26.

“This stage of our Summer Showcase is about bringing together the top under-18 players in Canada to work and learn from an elite-level coaching staff, giving them the necessary skills for their hockey development to grow and succeed,” said Alan Millar, Director of Player Personnel for Hockey Canada.

“We have an opportunity to connect with the players through on- and off-ice sessions to give them the tools that will only enhance their skill set as they advance through our program and prepare for the upcoming season.”

Mateychuk, who turns 17 on July 12, hails from Winnipeg, MB, and was the only defenceman on Canada’s Under-18 National Team that won gold at the 2021 IIHF U-18 World Championships this past April in Texas.

The Subway WHL Hub was his first full campaign as a Warrior, and he impressed in a big way, as he posted nine points and played in all situations over 16 contests before he departed for Team Canada.

The summer development camp will include practices and split-squad contests between July 26 and Aug. 3, and its roster also includes fellow Team Canada U18 gold medalist and Regina Pats’ forward Connor Bedard.

One notable omission from a Moose Jaw perspective is forward Jagger Firkus, who emerged as a key cog in the Warriors’ offence in the second half of the Hub season, and scored 13 of his 14 points during the April portion of the campaign.
