Persson scores first WHL goal

Short-handed early in the third period, Viktor Persson scored his first WHL goal in just his fourth game. The goal tied the game at two before the Kelowna Rockets went on to defeat the Kamloops Blazers 4-2.

Persson was selected 56th overall at the 2021 CHL Import Draft.

Rysavy grabs first WHL goal

Down 1-0 early in the second period, Martin Rysavy scored his first WHL goal to tie the game at one. Rysavy was playing in his fifth WHL contest.

The 18-year-old from Prerov, Czech Republic, was the sixth overall selection at the 2020 CHL Import Draft. He is also a seventh-round NHL Draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Valis buries his first

In just his third WHL game, Borya Valis scored his first WHL goal. The goal came at 12:36 with the Winnipeg ICE ahead 2-0. The Regina Pats fell 4-2 to the Ice.

Valis, 17, from Denver, Colorado, was a listed prospect of the Pats.

Sidorov scores first WHL goal

With the Saskatoon Blades up 1-0 over the Medicine Hat Tigers, Egor Sidorov scored his first WHL goal on the power play. The Blades went on to win 4-0.

Sidorov, 17, from Vitebsk, Belarus, was the 20th overall CHL Import Draft pick.

Beaupit records first WHL shutout

Stopping all 18 shots sent his way, 18-year-old goaltender Mason Beaupit recorded his first WHL shutout. It was his 17th WHL game, and he has a 5-6-4 record, with a 3.25 goals-against average, and a .906 save percentage.

Beaupit, from Surrey, BC, was a fourth-round pick at the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft.

Maddocks traded to Kamloops

The Regina Pats announced they have received an eighth-round WHL Prospects draft pick in 2021 for 18-year-old goaltender Keegan Maddocks.

Maddocks, from Langley, BC, has played four WHL games and has a 0-1-0 record, with a 3.26 goals-against average, and a .900 save percentage. All four games came with the Victoria Royals, Maddocks was traded to Regina on July 27th, 2021.

Viveiros takes non-COVID medical leave from Silver Knights

From the press release: “Henderson Silver Knights Head Coach Manny Viveiros will be taking a non-COVID medical leave of absence from the team. Assistant Coach Jamie Heward will assume the lead role in the interim alongside Joel Ward, Fred Brathwaite, and Andrew Doty. We will provide additional updates when appropriate.”

Viveiros, 55, from St. Albert, AB, has three seasons of WHL coaching experience under his belt with the Swift Current Broncos and Spokane Chiefs. This was to be his first season as the head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL.

The University of Manitoba adds WHL alumni as recruits to roster

21-year-old defenseman Garrett Sambrook (2 goals, 23 assists in 163 games with Brandon and Swift Current from 2015-20), 22-year-old forward Brett Davis (93 goals, 107 assists in 309 games with Lethbridge, Kootenay, and Red Deer from 2014-20) and forward Duncan Pierce (16 goals, 28 assists in 142 games with Regina and Brandon from 2016-20) have joined the University of Manitoba Bison’s hockey team.

Sander heads to University of Western Ontario

21-year-old defenseman Jack Sander (nine goals, 38 assists in 203 games with Prince George from 2017-21) has joined the University of Western Ontario Mustangs.

Sander, from Beaumont, AB, was not drafted by the Cougars but worked his way up to captain of the team.

McNabb joins UBC Thunderbirds

21-year-old forward Cyle McNabb (15 goals, 26 assists in 175 games with Vancouver, Kootenay, Saskatoon, and Medicine Hat from 2017-20) has joined the roster of the UBC Thunderbirds.

Bjorklund heads to Concordia University

20-year-old forward Paycen Bjorklund (17 goals, 15 assists in 153 games with Tri-City from 2017-20) has joined the roster of Concordia University.
