DUB’s Daily Dose: ICE punch ticket to post season, Ostapchuk named Giants captain, and more!

 

ICE clinch playoff spot

The Winnipeg ICE claimed their spot in the 2022 DUB playoffs with a 2-0 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday night. With a 37-9-3-2 record, the ICE are the second team in the Eastern Conference and the seventh DUB team to join the playoffs.

Ostapchuk named Giants captain

2003-born forward Zack Ostapchuk was named the 19th captain in Vancouver Giants history. Originally the 12th overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft is in his third season with the Giants where he has 30 points (16G-14A) in 45 points in 2021-22.

“It’s truly an honor to be named captain of the Vancouver Giants,” said Zack Ostapchuk in a statement on the Giants website. “I want to sincerely thank my teammates, the Giants ownership group, management team, and coaching staff for their trust in me. There are some great leaders in our dressing room, and together we’re going to do our best to make our fans, and our city proud.”

“Day in, day out, Zack Ostapchuk leads with both his actions and his words and personifies what it means to be a Vancouver Giant. He’s earned the full respect of his teammates, coaches, and management because of how he plays, how he competes, and how he conducts himself off the ice,” general manager Barclay Parneta said in the release.

In 117 DUB games so far in his career, the St. Albert, AB has played 117 games where he has 54 points (28G-26A).

Shaw sent to Iowa

Mason Shaw (Medicine Hat 2014-18) was reassigned to the Iowa Wild from the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. The 23-year-old forward played three games with the Minnesota version of the Wild where he was held off the scoresheet. In 41 games with Iowa, he has 33 points (13G-20A).

In 161 DUB games all with the Tigers, the Lloydminster, AB product had 163 points (47G-116A) in 161 games.

Heatherington reassigned to Belleville

Dillon Heatherington (Swift Current 2010-15) was sent down by the Ottawa Senators to their AHL affiliate in Belleville. The 26-year-old has played nine games with the Ottawa version of the Senators, he has no points. In Belville, he has 11 points (2G-9A) in 24 games.

The Calgary product played his DUB career with the Broncos where he was more known for his defense, he suited up for 247 games collecting 87 points (13G-74A).
