Having not played since the 2017-18 season, Brooks Laich (206GP, 78G, 124A with Moose Jaw and Seattle ’00-’03) has decided to officially announce his retirement. The 38-yea-old forward was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round of the 2001 NHL Draft. Laich then went on to play 776 NHL games with the Senators, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Los Angeles Kings.

Winterhawks sign Zakreski

The Portland Winterhawks announced the signing of 15-year-old forward Josh Zakreski on Monday. Zakreski was the Winterhawks eighth-round pick at the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft. He played last season with the Saskatoon Blazers, earning one assist in four games.

Loewen signs contract extension with Silver Knights

23-year-old forward Jermaine Loewen (295GP, 78G 64A with Kamloops ’14-’19) has been signed to a contract extension by the Henderson Silver Knights, the AHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. Loewen played 22 games with the Silver Knights in 2020-21, registering one assist. Loewen was a 2018 seventh-round draft pick of the Dallas Stars, who chose not to sign him. He then went on to play with the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and Fort Wayne Komets (ECHL) in 2019-20.

Bowman joins uOttawa

21-year-old forward Nick Bowman (209GP, 29G, 34A with Edmonton, Moose Jaw, Kootenay, and Tri-City ’16-’21) has committed to the University of Ottawa for the 2021-22 season. Bowman scored five goals and added two assists in 19 games with the Americans in 2020-21.

Slipec commits to Eagles

Kamloops Blazers’ second-round pick at the 2020 WHL Draft, Grayden Slipec, has committed to the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL. Slipec, 16, played 2020-21 with the Burnaby Winter Club, registering two goals and three assists in four games.

Zawatsky no longer with Blue Devils

21-year-old forward Alec Zawatsky (107GP, 17G, 19A with Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Moose Jaw ’17-’19) has been released from Blue Devils Weiden of Germany3 to make room for junior players in Germany’s hockey system. In 18 games with the Blue Devils in 2020-21, Zawatsky scored three goals and added four assists.
