Stene hangs em up

30-year-old Norwegian forward/defenceman Andreas Stene (55GP, 2G, 14A with Kelowna ’10-’11) has retired from professional hockey. Stene spent the last four seasons playing at home with Valerenga of Norway. In 2020-21, Stene recorded one goal and three assists in 25 games. The Rockets selected Stene 25th overall at the 2010 CHL Import Draft.

WHL Alumni win ECHL’s Kelly Cup

Goaltender Dylan Ferguson (155GP, 61-72-11, 3.04GAA, .908sv% with Kamloops ’15-’19) and forward Zach Pochiro (169GP, 61G, 86A with Prince George ’12-’15) won the ECHL’s Kelly Cup last night as members of the Fort Wayne Komets. The Komets had to get through the Witchita Thunder, Allen Americans, and then in the finals defeated the South Carolina Stingrays three games to one.

Fatul opts for Bratislava Capitals

18-year-old Slovakian defenceman Oliver Fatul has chosen not to head to the Swift Current Broncos in 2021-22. The Broncos selected Fatul third overall in the 2020 CHL Import Draft and were hopeful he would make his way to North America. Swift Current selected two players at the 2021 edition of the CHL Import Draft.

Sutter heads to Vienna

29-year-old forward Brody Sutter (231GP, 57G, 68A with Saskatoon and Lethbridge ’08-’12) has signed with the Vienna Capitals of the ICEHL. Sutter most recently spent two seasons playing for the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL, where he posted nine goals and three assists in 24 regular-season games in 2020-21. Sutter was a 2011 seventh-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes. He has 12 games of NHL experience.

Kulda, Svanenbergs sign professional tryout with Dinamo Riga

26-year-old Latvian forward Edgars Kulda (177GP, 49G, 58A with Edmonton ’12-’15) has signed a professional tryout with Dinamo Riga of the KHL. Kulda spent 2020-21 playing for Metallurg Novokuznetsk of the VHL where he scored eight goals and added eight assists in 41 regular-season games. He also added two goals and five assists in 14 playoff games. Kulda was a member of the 2013-14 Edmonton Oil Kings team that won both the Ed Chynoweth Cup and the Memorial Cup. He was selected 28th overall at the 2012 CHL Import Draft.

19-year-old forward Janis Svanenbergs has also signed a tryout contract with Dinamo Riga. Svanenbergs was the 58th overall selection, by the Edmonton Oil Kings, at the CHL Import Draft in 2020.

Filbrandt departs DEAC

26-year-old defenceman Clint Filbrandt (40GP, 1G, 1A with Tri-City and Kootenay ’12-’14) has no reached an agreement with DEAC of the Erste Liga in Hungary. In the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season, Filbrandt played 27 games with DEAC and scored three goals to go with four assists. In the playoffs, Filbrandt contributed two goals and four assists in nine games.
