Silvertips move into first overall with win over Cougars

Ryan Hofer (18th, 19th) and Jackson Berezowski (27th, 28th) each scored twice as the Everett Silvertips beat the Prince George Cougars 6-1 at Angel Of The Winds Arena. Alex Swetlikoff (21st) and Niko Huuhtanen (22nd) rounded out the scoring in front of 5,117 fans who witnessed their hometown Silvertips dominate the Cougars, outshooting them 54-16 as they won their fourth in a row. With the win, the Silvertips took a one-point lead over the Winnipeg ICE for first overall in the WHL standings. Hudson Thornton (ninth) replied for the Cougars who lost their fourth straight.

Koen MacInnes stopped 15 shots for the Silvertips as he picked up his 12th win of the season. Ty Young went the distance stopping 48 of 54 shots directed his way. The boxscore.

Stankoven leads Blazers to 8-4 win over Royals

It was the Logan Stankoven show at the Sandman Centre on Saturday as the Kamloops Blazers captain led the way with five points in an 8-4 win over the Victoria Royals. Stankoven scored a hat-trick (20th, 21st, 22nd) and added two assists. Luke Toporowski (22nd) scored his eighth goal in his fifth game since his acquisition from the Chiefs. Caedan Bankier (13th), Viktor Persson (third), and Drew Englot (sixth, first with the Blazers) rounded out the scoring. Kamloops went 2-for-9 on the powerplay while outshooting the Royals 55-25 in the contest.

Brayden Schuurman (22nd), Carter Briltz (third), Bailey Peach (25th), and Ryan Spizawka (first career) replied for the Royals who scored twice on the powerplay in the loss. The Royals have gone winless in 11 straight games going 0-10-0-1.

Dylan Ernst made 21 saves for the Blazers for his sixth victory with the Blazers who won their fifth straight contest. Tyler Palmer got the nod for the Royals and was beaten for all eight goals in 45 shots in 45:29. Campbell Arnold was called in for relief and stopped all 10 shots he faces in 14:31. The boxscore.

Rockets come back to beat the Giants

The Kelowna Rockets scored a trio of third-period goals in a comeback victory over the visiting Vancouver Giants in front of 3,400 at Prospera Place.

Evan Toth (second) opened the scoring in the first period, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead which they held until the halfway mark of the third period. The Rockets struck for three goals in just under six minutes to take the game. John Babcock (second) scored at 9:53, Jake Poole (12th) at 11:19, and Pavel Novak (18th) sealed it for the Rockets with a shorthanded marker at 15:40.

Talyn Boyko stopped 24 shots as the Rockets won their sixth in a row and collected his 15th win as a Rocket. Jesper Vikman stopped 28 shots in the loss for the Giants who dropped their third straight. The boxscore.

Winterhawks outgun Thunderbirds 6-5 in shootout

The Portland Winterhawks came back three different times in a 6-5 SO victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent.

Five different Winterhawks scored in regulation who were down 3-0, 4-3, and 5-4 before James Stefan scored the lone shootout goal. Jack O’Brien (eighth), Josh Zakreski (first career), Kyle Chyzowski (fourth), Tyson Kozak (21st), and Cross Hanas (13th) scored the Winterhawks goals. Jordan Gustafson (15th, 16th) scored twice while Lucas Ciona (10th), Henrik Rybinski (13th), and Sam Popowich (fourth) replied for the Thunderbirds.

Dante Giannuzzi stopped 39 shots for the Winterhawks who won their sixth straight and 13th straight game with a point (12-0-0-1). Thomas Milic stopped 27 of 32 shots in the loss. The boxscore.

Chiefs outlast Americans 5-4

The Spokane Chiefs got back into the win column with a 5-4 home win over the Tri-City Americans before 5,736 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

Defenseman Raegan Wiles led the way for the Chiefs with a pair of goals (third, fourth) and an assist. Nick McCarry (eighth), Logan Cunningham (first career), and Chase Bertholet (14th) rounded out the scoring for the Chiefs. Samuel Huo (12th, 13th) scored twice and Ethan Ernst (ninth), and Petr Moravec (ninth) added singles for the Americans in the loss.

Mason Beaupit stopped 20 shots to pick up his eighth win of the season. Tomas Suchanek faced 36 shots, stopping 31 in the loss. The boxscore.

Oil Kings dominate Broncos in 7-0 win

The Edmonton Oil Kings scored six second period goals en route to a 7-0 win over the Swift Current Broncos. The Oil Kings outshot the Broncos by the tune of 50-11 before 5,166 at Rogers Place.

Carter Souch scored twice (11th, 12th) to lead the way for the Oil Kings. Jake Neighbours (8th), Jakub Demak (14th), Brendan Kuny (second), Cole Miller (third), and Kaiden Guhle (fourth) rounded out the scoring for the Central leading Oil Kings.

Sebastian Cossa made 11 saves to pick up his 3rd shutout of the season and 11th of his career. Reid Dyck stopped 43 of 50 Oil Kings shots in the loss.

The 11 shots allowed were the fewest allowed in Oil Kings franchise history.

King, Rebels crush Hurricanes 8-1

Ben King scored his league-leading 31st, 32nd, and 33rd goals and added an assist in an 8-1 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Peavey Mart Centrium before 2,761 spectators.

Despite the shots being 39-39 the Rebels dominated on the scoreboard. Liam Keeler added a pair of goals (18th, 19th) for the Rebels, who also got singles from Dallon Melin (fifth), Carter Anderson (seventh), and Frantisek Formanek (first career goal). Logan Wormald replied for the Hurricanes with his eighth of the season.

Connor Ungar was outstanding for the Rebels making 38 saves collecting his 14th win of the season. Jared Picklyk got the start for the Hurricanes and stopped 24 shots before being pulled after the Rebels made the score 4-0 at 15:09 of the second period. Harrison Meneghin allowed four goals on 11 shots in relief in his first career WHL action. The boxscore.

DUB Firsts

Spizawka nets first for Royals

2004-born defenseman Ryan Spizawka scored his first career goal for his hometown Victoria Royals in an 8-4 loss to the Blazers. In 41 games with the Royals he now has five points (1G-4A).

Zakreski notches first for Winterhawks

Playing in just his eighth game for the Winterhawks, 16-year-old Josh Zakreski notched his first career DUB goal in a 6-5 SO win over the Thunderbirds.

Cunningham scores first for Chiefs

Logan Cunningham, a product of Yellowknife, NT scored his first career goal in a 5-4 win over the Americans. The defenseman was playing in his 46th career game and now has five points (1G-4A).

Formanek scores his first for the Rebels

Recently signed Frantisek Formanek scored his first career WHL goal in an 8-1 Rebels thumping of the Hurrincanes. Through eight DUB games he has three points (1G-2A).

Oksanen leaves Mora IK

Emil Oksanan (Regina 2017-18) was released by Mora IK of Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan where he played 24 games, collecting six points (3G-3A).

The presser from Mora IK translated from Swedish: “In the competitive situation that exists in the team, we can unfortunately not give Emil the ice [time] he wants and needs for his development. We have jointly come to the conclusion that this is the best thing for Emil’s development. He is a very lovely guy who we wish all the best for the future, says coach Johan Hedberg.”

The winger from Kirkkonummi, Finland played his single DUB season with the Pats when they hosted the 2018 Memorial Cup. He had 48 points (16G-32A) in 58 games with the Eastern Division club.

Langan signs pro tryout with the Moose

Tristan Langan (Moose Jaw 2015-19) has signed a professional tryout with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The 23-year-old forward has 25 points (8G-17A) in 20 games for the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL. He also had a stint with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL where he suited up in eight games collecting three points (1G-2A).

The four-year DUB veteran from Swan River, MB played his entire career with the Warriors where he picked up 184 points (78G-106A) in 241 games.

Juulsen recalled to Canucks taxi squad

Noah Juulsen (Everett 2012-17) was added to the Vancouver Canucks taxi squad from the Abbotsford Canucks. The former first-round NHL pick (26th overall, Montreal in 2015) has played two games in Vancouver this season where he has no points. In 25 games for Abbotsford, he has 10 points (2G-8A).

The defenseman from Surrey, BC played his DUB career with the Silvertips where he had 124 points (30G-94A) in 240 games where he was the captain in 2016-17, his final season before turning pro.
