DUB Update

The WHL announced that the Brandon Wheat Kings and Kelowna Rockets have had their activities paused.

This affects a trio of weekend games:

Friday, January 21: Brandon at Regina and Kelowna at Everett (it has been rescheduled to Sunday, February 6)

Saturday, January 22: Kelowna at Vancouver

The league also rescheduled the game that was supposed to take place on Tuesday, January 18 between Winnipeg at Swift Current. The game will now take place Sunday, February 27.

DUB Recap

Cougars with fourth in a row beating Royals 4-1

In a game that featured only five minor penalties, the hometown Prince George Cougars won their fourth in a row with a 4-1 win over the Victoria Royals (who lost their fifth in a row) in front of 1,426 fans.

Koehn Zimmer‘s pair of goals (16th and 17th) in the first period were enough for the Cougars in the 4-1 win. Brayden Schuurman (21st) replied for the Royals with the lone goal in the second period. Jonny Hooker (12th) and Riley Heidt (10th) bookended the Cougars’ win with a pair of empty-net goals late in the game.

Ty Young picked up his second win of the season for the Cougars stopping 22 of 23 Royals shots. Tyler Palmer made 31 saves on 33 shots in the loss.

Warriors hammer the Hitmen 8-2

The Calgary Hitmen, playing their fourth game in five days, traveled to Moose Jaw to play the Warriors. The Warriors took advantage of the weary Hitmen in an 8-2 win in front of 2,095 faithful at Mosaic Place.

Jagger Firkus (22nd and 23rd) and newly acquired overage forward Cordel Larson (sixth and seventh) each scored twice for the Warriors in the win. Riley Niven (second), Maximus Wanner (third), Lucas Brenton (second), and Ryder Korczak (13th) rounded out the scoring for the Warriors. Riley Fiddler-Schultz (19th) and Grayden Siepmann (fifth) replied for the Hitmen.

Carl Tetachuk stopped 18 shots in picking up his 15th win in the Warrior cage. Ethan Buenaventura went the distance for the Hitmen, stopping 36 of 44 Warrior shots.

DUB Signing

Lovsin signs with Thunderbirds

Fifteen-year-old Simon Lovsin has signed a Standard Player Agreement with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Qualicum Beach, BC product was a second-round selection (44th overall) in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. In nine games with the Saints Pro Hockey Academy U17’s (in Penhold, AB) he has a whopping 20 points (8G-12-A).

DUB Alumni

Scheidl joins Storhamar

Lane Scheidl (Vancouver, Red Deer, Regina 2008-13) has joined Norway’s Storhamar IL Ishockey Elite for the rest of the season. He started the season as captain of the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL where he has 28 points (13G-15A) in 34 games.

The Sasaktoon, SK product played the majority of his WHL career with the Pats after spending time with the Giants and Rebels. In 277 WHL games he had 186 points (88G-98A).

Dubnyk released from his professional try-out

Devan Dubnyk (Kamloops 2001-06) was released from his professional tryout by the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL where he posted a 2-2-0 record with a 3.55 GAA and .869 SV%. The 35-year-old product of Regina had played the last 12 seasons in the NHL (Edmonton, Nashville, Minnesota, San Jose, Colorado).

During his WHL tenure with the Blazers, Dubnyk played 192 games going 83-87-14 with a 2.69 GAA, .912 SV%, and 15 shutouts.

Watts signs professional tryout with Condors

Brayden Watts (Moose Jaw, Vancouver, Prince Albert 2015-20) signed a professional tryout with his hometown Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. The 22-year-old forward has played 35 games this season with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder where he has 33 points (7G, 26A).

Watts started his WHL career with the Warriors before moving to the Giants and ending his career as an overage with the Raiders. In 315 career games over five seasons he had 161 points (68G-93A).

Blichfeld recalled by the Sharks

Joachim Blichfeld (Portland 2016-19) has been recalled by the San Jose Sharks. The Danish forward has played 28 games with the Sharks AHL affiliate Barracuda where he has 22 points (12G-10-A) this season. Over the last two seasons he has played in eight games with the Sharks where he sniped once.

The former seventh-round pick (210th) by the Sharks in the 2016 NHL Draft played his entire three-year WHL career with the Winterhawks skating in 187 games where he accumulated 228 points (105G-123A).
