WHL announces pricing for WHL Live on CHL TV

After announcing there was going to be a new streaming service for fans to enjoy WHL LIVE, the Western Hockey League gave fans a glimpse at their pricing for the 2020-21 season. A 24-hour pass will grant you access to all games on the date of purchase. An all-access pass grants the holder access to every game for the 2020-21 season. The league also announced that it would only be providing the home team’s broadcast on the live stream.

US Division schedule for the entire season announced

With play beginning on the 18th of March, the WHL announced the schedule for the 24-game season for the entire US Division. Notable in the schedule is the Portland Winterhawks home games as TBD following the March portion of the schedule. Portland and the Tri-City Americans kick off the US Division schedule with a game at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, WA.

Stuart joins Blazers coaching staff

Following an injury over the summer and facing a cutdown day with four 20-year-olds on the active roster, Brodi Stuart (204GP, 45G, 70A) has joined the Blazers coaching staff. Stuart was a fourth-round pick of the Blazers in the 2015 WHL Draft. He will still pursue a professional tryout or USports opportunity in the future.

Three new staff members join the Oil Kings

The Edmonton Oil Kings announced that three new staff members have joined their team ahead of the 2020-21 regular season. Shaun Mahe joins as video coach and hockey operations coordinator. Erin Klatt will head up gameday operations and Andrew Peard oversees hockey broadcasting and media.

Tigers announce leadership group

The Medicine Hat Tigers announced their leadership group for the 2020-21 season. 20-year-old forward Ryan Chyzowski (257GP, 87G, 101A) will wear the ‘C’ as captain after two seasons as an assistant captain. Forward Brett Kemp (232GP,84G, 103A with Everett, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat) and defenseman Cole Clayton (191GP, 8G, 50A) will be full-time alternate captains. Forwards Corson Hopwo (122GP, 21G, 37A) and Lukas Svejkovsky (119GP, 27G, 37A with Vancouver and Medicine Hat) will share the responsibilities of the third assistant captain.

Thompson recalled by the Golden Knights

Goaltender Logan Thompson (122GP, 63-41-10, 3.26GAA, .905sv% with Brandon ’14-’18) has been recalled by the Vegas Golden Knights to serve on their taxi squad. Thompson has yet to see game action in the NHL but has recorded a 4-1-0 record, 1.81 goals-against average and .942 save percentage with the Henderson Silver Knights this season. Thompson led the 2015-16 Brandon Wheat Kings to the Ed Chynoweth Cup championship.

Kings recall Strand to their roster

The Los Angeles Kings have recalled defenseman Austin Strand (268GP, 40G, 82A with Red Deer and Seattle ’14-’18) to their active roster from the taxi squad. Strand has played seven games this season with the Kings, registering an assist. Last season Strand played exclusively for the Kings’ AHL affiliate the Ontario Reign. Strand won the 2016-17 Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Laurikainen signs extension with HPK

Goaltender Eetu Laurikainen (114GP, 55-43-12, 2.63GAA, .918sv% with Swift Current ’12-’14) has signed a one-year contract extension with HPK of Liiga in Finland. It is Laurikainen’s second stint with HPK, having played for the team in 2015-16 as part of a loan from the Bakersfield Condors. Laurikainen also won the Champions League championship in 2017-18 with JYP of Liiga.

Maser reassigned to Allen Americans

Forward Josh Maser (218GP, 90G, 53A with Prince Albert and Prince George ’15-’20) has been reassigned by the Iowa Wild to the Allen Americans (ECHL). In two games with Iowa, Maser registered his first professional goal. Maser was a fourth-round pick of the Prince Albert Raiders in 2014.

Sissons reassigned to Everblades

Defenseman Colby Sissons (208GP, 22G, 99A with Swift Current ’14-’18) has been reassigned to the Florida Everblades by the New Jersey Devils. Sissons has yet to play a game this season. Sissons was not drafted to the WHL or the NHL but he helped the Swift Current Broncos win the 2017-18 Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Schaufler on the move

Defenseman Loeden Schaufler (112GP, 3G, 11A with Kootenay, Seattle, Prince Albert, and Edmonton) has been traded by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) to the Sherwood Park Saints (AJHL). The 20-year-old Schaufler has not yet played a game this season. The Kootenay ICE selected Schaufler in the third round of the 2015 WHL Draft.
