Hockey Canada cancels World U-17 Hockey Challenge

Chips continue to fall in the hockey world as it was announced that the World U-17 Hockey Challenge to be held in Charlottetown and Summerside, Prince Edward Island has been canceled. This is the first event that falls within the typical fall hockey schedule. Hockey Canada did mention that other fall events have yet to be canceled including the Women’s U-18 National Championships as well as the IIHF World Junior Championships, to be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, AB.
Former Spokane Chiefs Assistant Coach extends contract
Rikard Grönborg has extended his contract with the Zurich Lions through 2023. The former Swedish national team coach has previously expressed a desire to work in the NHL, and received some interest from the New Jersey Devils a few months back. https://t.co/t7pmxk2vvT

Rikard Gronborg spent just one season in the WHL as an assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs. He was behind the bench for the 2004-05 season when Al Conroy was the team’s head coach and Tim Speltz was the General Manager. Spokane had a 24-38-4-2 record that season.
Former players sign contracts overseas
Tanner Eberle (Moose Jaw, 2010-2015) signed one-year contract extension with Sheffield Steelers (England, UK Elite). 49 GP, 21+23.

Eberle (270GP, 80G, 92A) spent his entire junior hockey career with the Moose Jaw Warriors. He signed on for a third season with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL, which is the top tier of hockey in the United Kingdom. in 106 games with the team, he has scored 30 goals and added 40 assists.
Yan Khomenko (Everett, Prince George, Moose Jaw, Victoria, 2015-2018) signed one-year contract extension with Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan, Vysshaya Liga). 29 GP, 4+2, 10:42 average TOI; on loan to Altay-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan, Kazakh Vysshaya Liga) 2 GP, 1+0.

Khomenko played for four different WHL teams compiling 22 goals and 28 assists in 134 contests. His best season was in 2016-17 where the 6-foot-2, 187-pound prospect played for Prince George and Moose Jaw scored 15 times and added 16 assists in 68 games. His one year deal is with Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk (Vysshaya Liga), a team he played 29 games with last season and registered four goals and two assists. He was also loaned to Altay-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakh Vysshaya Liga) for two games, scoring once.

The day after the import draft it was announced that 2001-born import Alistrov had signed overseas with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL on a professional contract. Teams in the KHL will be resuming skating earlier than the teams in the WHL. Alistrov played two seasons with the Oil Kings scoring 31 goals and adding 42 assists in 119 WHL games.
