Popwich scores first WHL goal

18-year-old forward Sam Popowich scores his first WHL goal early in the first period to give the Seattle Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead. The team went on to a 5-3 win over the Spokane Chiefs.

Popowich, who is from Camrose, AB was the Thunderbirds fifth-round pick at the 2018 WHL Draft. He was playing in his 35th WHL game.

Lane nabs first WHL goal

18-year-old forward Grady Lane scored his first WHL goal at 11:43 of the second period to give the Chiefs their first goal of the game. They trailed Seattle 3-1. The Chiefs ended up with a 5- loss.

Lane, who is from Virdin, MB, was an eighth-round pick of the Chiefs at the 2018 WHL Draft. He was playing in his 27th WHL game.

Birnie nets first WHL goal

With the Swift Current Broncos trailing the Medicine Hat Tigers 2-1, 16-year-old Brady Birnie tied the game at two with a goal in the second period.

Birnie, who is from Regina, SK, was the Broncos’ first-round pick at the 2020 WHL Draft. The forward was seeing action in his 12th WHL game

Hvidston gets his first WHL goal

Moments later the Broncos grabbed a 3-2 lead as Connor Hvidston also scored his first WHL goal.

Hvidston, who is from Tisdale, SK, was the Broncos’ seventh-round pick at the 2019 WHL Draft. He was playing in his eighth WHL game.

Gould scores first WHL goal

After the Medicine Hat Tigers tied the score at three, Rylan Gould made it 4-3 for the Swift Current Broncos at 18:19 of the second period.

Gould, who hails from Headingly, MB, was a second-round pick of the Broncos at the 2020 WHL Draft. He was playing in his eighth WHL game.

45 players named to NHL Central Scouting Preliminary Players to Watch list

The NHL released its Central Scouting ‘Players to Watch’ list ahead of the upcoming 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal.

Three WHL players were among the top tier, listed as ‘A’ prospects.

Kemell signs with JYP

17-year-old forward Joakim Kemell has signed with JYP of Liiga in Finland.

Kemell was Regina’s first pick (32nd overall) at the 2021 CHL Import Draft. He has 10 goals and five assists in 13 games with JYP this season. In U-20 action internationally for Finland, Kemell has one goal and one assist in three games.
