WHL announces seven changes to the rule book for 2021-22

With the Western Hockey League pre-season getting underway on Friday, September 10, the league took the time to lay out seven rule changes.

  2. Face-off violation
  3. Crease violation
  4. Helmets during a fight
  5. Coaches Challenge
  6. Video goal judge reviewable situation
  7. No line change by icing team on any icing

Silvertips sign two prospects

The Everett Silvertips announced the signing of two players to WHL Standard Player Agreements.

16-year-old forward Kyan Grouette, a seventh-round 2020 WHL Draft pick, played 2020-21 with the Parkland Rangers U18 AAA team. He had two assists in seven games.

16-year-old defenseman Logan Greenough, a 10th round 2020 WHL Draft pick, spent the 2020-21 season with NWCAA Stampeders U16 AAA team. He had four assists in three games.

Hitmen add Stajan as assistant coach

37-year-old Matt Stajan has been added to the Calgary Hitmen coaching staff. Stajan will join head coach Steve Hamilton and assistant coach Trent Cassan behind the bench.

Stajan retired from his professional hockey career at the conclusion of the 2018-19 DEL season. He had been playing for EHC Munchen. Prior to that, he had played 1003 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames.

Heat re-sign Wilson, add Perepeluk

The Stockton heat announced four roster moves, including two WHL alumni on Thursday.

21-year-old forward Reid Perepeluk (14 goals, 17 assists in 140 games with Prince George and Brandon 2017-21) has been signed to his first professional contract by the Heat. Last season with the Wheat Kings, Perepeluk scored four goals and added one assist in 21 games.

22-year-old defenceman Koletrane Wilson (11 goals, 52 assists in 190 games with Lethbridge 2016-20) has re-signed with the Stockton Heat. Last season in five games with the Heat, Wilson was held pointless. He also played 18 games with the Kansas City Mavericks, registering four assists.

Mavericks re-sign Scheidl

29-year-old forward Lane Scheidl (88 goals, 98 assists in 277 games with Vancouver, Red Deer, and Regina 2008-13) has been re-signed by the ECHL’s Kansas City Mavericks.

Scheidl, who is from Saskatoon, SK, played 71 games with the Mavericks in 2020-21. He had 24 goals and 26 assists.

Scherbak signs with HC Banska Bystrica

25-year-old forward Nikita Scherbak (55 goals, 105 assists in 135 games with Saskatoon and Everett 2013-15) has signed with HC Banska Bystrica of Slovakia.

Scherbak, who is from Moskva, RUS, played 28 games for the Texas Stars in 2020-21. He scored five goals and added 10 assists.

The Montreal Canadiens selected Scherbak in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft. He has 37 games of NHL experience with the Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings.
