On Thursday, the Seattle Thunderbirds named their leadership group, headed by 2002-born defenseman Tyrel Bauer (126GP, 5G, 26A). Joining Bauer as assistant captains are forwards, 2000-born Keltie Jeri-Leon (227GP, 41G, 42A with Tri-City, Kamloops, Lethbridge, and Seattle), 2001-born Henrik Rybinski (163GP, 22G, 61A Medicine Hat, and Seattle), and 2002-born Matthew Rempe (47GP, 12G, 19A)

Sloan scores first-ever WHL goal

Tri-City Americans 2004-born forward Jake Sloan scored his first WHL goal last night in the Tri-City Americans 3-2 overtime win over the Portland Winterhawks. Sloan was a third-round WHL Draft pick by the Americans in 2019. His goal came at 17:12 of the first period and tied the game at one.

Wheat Kings owner are building a new arena in Brandon

A facility, already being built in the southwest corner of Brandon, MB has been announced as a hockey rink. Brandon Wheat Kings owner Jared Jacobson and the J & G Group of Companies has planned to build a 350-500 seat arena, mainly suited to be a new hybrid hockey academy. The rink will also potentially be the new home for a number of local hockey teams.

WHL announces a positive test among the Kelowna Rockets team cohort

The Western Hockey League announced on Thursday that a member of the Kelowna Rockets team cohort had tested positive. Contact tracing determined that only one person had been deemed a close contact and therefore just two people were required to self-isolate. The team itself was able to continue conducting normal activities as scheduled.

Getzlaf hits 700 NHL assists

Forward Ryan Getzlaf (233GP, 95G, 120A with Calgary ’01-’05) has reached the NHL milestone of 700 assists. Getzlaf is the 55th player all-time to reach 700 assists. It is his 16th NHL season. Getzlaf was a member of the 2004-05 Team Canada that won the IIHF World Juniors gold medal. He also won a silver medal at the 2003-04 edition of the tournament.

Ferguson and Thompson returned to Silver Knights

Goaltenders Dylan Ferguson (155GP, 61-72-11, 3.04GAA, .908sv% with Kamloops ’15-’19) and Logan Thompson (122GP, 63-41-10, 3.26GAA, .905sv% with Brandon ’14-’18) were both reassigned to the Henderson Silver Knights. Ferguson has played just one game this season, with the Henderson Silver Knights, posting a shutout. Thompson is 6-1-0 with the Silver Knights and has a 1.72 goals-against average and .946 save percentage. He has also seen eight minutes of action with the Vegas Golden Knights making two saves.

Pickard signs extension with Wolfsburg

Goaltender Chet Pickard (169GP, 107-43-9, 2.48GAA, .914sv% with Tri-City ’05-’09) has signed an extension with Grizzlys Wolfsburg of the DEL. Pickard has seen 11 games of action this season with the Wolfsburg, posting a 6-5-0 record and a 2.52 goals-against average with a .913 save percentage. Pickard won the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships gold medal with Team Canada. With Alder Mannheim in 2018-19 Pickard won the DEL Championship. Was drafted in the first round by the Nashville Predators in 2008.

Maier signs extension with HC Slovan Bratislava

Defenseman Patrik Maier (113GP, 9G, 7A with Kamloops and Moose Jaw ’14-’16) has signed a contract extension with HC Slovan Bratislava until April 30, 2022. Bratislava is his third team in the Czech league, having previously played with Bili Tygri Liberec, HKM Zvolen, and HC Banska Bystrica.

Harlacher joins EHC Winterthur for the 2021-22 season

Defenseman Edson Harlacher (71GP, 0G, 9A with Kamloops ’13-’14) has signed with EHC Winterthur of the SL in Switzerland. Harlacher won a Swiss Cup with EHC Kloten in 2016-17.

Wheat Kings draft pick commits to University of Nebraska-Omaha for 2022-23

Brandon Wheat Kings 2019 fifth-round draft pick Kaiden Ellertson has committed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha for the 2022-23 season. Ellertson recently committed to the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the AJHL for the 2021-22 season. As a member of the Red Deer Rebels U18 AAA team this season, Ellertson has scored two goals and added three assists in five games.
