Thunderbirds add King from Warriors

The Seattle Thunderbirds sent a 2024 sixth-round WHL Draft pick to the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for 19-year-old defenseman Cory King.

King, who is from Souris, MB, has played 64 WHL games and has scored three goals and added seven assists. He was originally a fifth-round pick by the Warriors at the 2017 WHL Draft.

Szturc to join Rockets

Although DUBNetwork was unable to get confirmation from the Kelowna Rockets, their first-round pick at the CHL Import Draft, Gabriel Szturc, appears to be headed to North America.

The 17-year-old forward, Szturc, who is from Cesky Tesin, Czech Republic, played five games at the U18 World Championships and scored three goals to go with one assist. He also played 11 games with BK Mlada Boleslav U20 (2G, 4A), nine games with BK Mlada Boleslav (Czech league, 0G, 0A) and 16 games with HC Slovan Usti nad Labem (1G, 5A)

UBC adds two WHL Alumni to their 2021-22 roster

21-year-old defencemen Matt Leduc (5 goals, 28 assists in 174 games with Spokane 2016-21) and Matthew Smith (7 goals, 27 assists in 211 games with Victoria 2017-21) have committed to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for the 2021-22 season.

Leduc had his best season with the Chiefs in 2020-21, scoring one goal and adding seven assists in 21 games with the Chiefs.

Last season Smith scored one goal and added one assist in 22 games on the blue line for the Royals.

Hawryluck joins Skelleftea

25-year-old forward Jayce Hawryluk (119 goals, 159 assists in 232 games with Brandon 2012-16) has signed with Skelleftea AIK of the SHL.

Hawryluk spent the 2020-21 season as a member of the Vancouver Canucks where he scored two goals and added three assists in 30 games. He was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft.

The Brandon Wheat Kings won the Ed Chynoweth Cup with Hawryluk in 2015-16.

Morrow joins Barys Nur-Sultan

28-year-old defenceman Joe Morrow (33 goals, 118 assists in 227 games with Portland 2007-12) has signed a contract to play with Barys Nur-Sultan of the KHL.

Last season, Morrow played 29 games with Assat of Liiga in Finland. He scored four times and added seven assists.

The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Morrow 23rd overall at the 2011 NHL Draft.

Buyalsky signs with Chelmet Chelyabinsk

20-year-old forward Yegor Buyalsky (6 goals, 8 assists in 66 games with Moose Jaw 2018-19) has signed with Chelmet Chelyabinsk of the VHL.

Last season Buyalsky played 30 games with Yunost Minsk in Belarus where he scored two goals and added five assists. He also played 17 games with Yunior Minsk in Belarus Vysshaya, scoring nine goals and adding 14 assists. He won the Belarussian Championship with Yunior Minsk in 2020-21, scoring three goals and adding six assists in 11 playoff games.

Bassen commits to Michigan State University

16-year-old forward Riley Bassen, a Lethbridge Hurricanes second-round WHL US Draft pick, has opted to commit to Michigan State University.

Bassen, who is from Frisco, TX, is on the roster of the Dallas Stars Elite U16 AAA team for the 2021-22 season.

Bazevics joins Olimp Riga

27-year-old defenceman Kristaps Bazevics (0G, 0A in two games with Prince Albert 2011-12) has signed with Olimp Riga of Latvia.

Bazevics played 21 games with HK Mogo of the same league in 2020-21 and had two assists.

Americans ink Jean

17-year-old forward Dwayne Jean has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement. Jean was not drafted by a WHL club but the Americans scouting staff kept an eye on him over the last 18 months.

Jean, from Edmonton, Alta., spent the 2020-21 season with the U18 CAC Canadians in the AEHL U18, scoring two goals and adding seven assists in six games. In 2019-20, he recorded 15 goals and 20 assists in 35 games with OHA Edmonton.

Hajek re-signs with Rangers

23-year-old defenceman Libor Hajek (19 goals, 72 assists with Saskatoon and Regina 2015-18) has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the New York Rangers.

Last season with the Rangers, Hajek scored two goals and added two assists in 44 games. He was also loaned to HC Kometa Brno for 10 games, where he collected two assists. At the World Championships, Hajek had one goal and two assists in eight games.

The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Hajek in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He was dealt to the Rangers on February 26th, 2018. The Saskatoon Blades made Hajek the second overall selection at the 2015 CHL Import Draft.

Shmyr heads to Ostersunds IK

24-year-old forward Braylon Shmyr (111 goals, 129 assists in 300 games with Brandon and Saskatoon 2012-18) has signed with Ostersunds IK of HockeyEttan in Sweden.

Shmyr, who is from Vancouver, BC, spent the 2020-21 season with two ECHL teams. He was held pointless in three games with the Allen Americans. Once he moved onto the Utah Grizzlies, Shmyr posted three goals and three assists in 11 games.

Quenneville earns full contract with ZSC Lions

25-year-old forward John Quenneville (81 goals, 116 assists in 222 games with Brandon 2012-16) has earned a full contract with ZSC Lions in Switzerland following a try-out.

Last season, Quenneville spent 16 games with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL where he scored one goal and added one assist.

The New Jersey Devils selected Quenneville in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft. He has 42 games of NHL experience.
