Daily Dose of the Dub: Kryski returns; Stankoven and Sward honored; McLeod and Hardy overtime heroes

ICE part ways with another assistant coach:

-The Winnipeg ICE announced on Monday that Gord Burnett, who was an assistant coach with the organization from 2015-16 through 2018-19 would not be returning for the 2019-20 season.

Burnett, who is from Regina, also coached at Hockey Canada’s U17 Development Camp and was the head coach for Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games.

The news is somewhat of a surprise in that Burnett and the ICE had agreed to a two-year extension back in August.

Kryski returns:

-The Calgary Hitmen got an unexpected boost in the lineup when overage assistant captain Jake Kryski suited up to play in Game 3. Kryski had 46 points in 41 games in 2018-19 before being injured and not playing another game since putting up three assists in Saskatoon on January 11th.

Kryski had 15 points in his last 11 games before getting hurt. Kryski and the Hitmen now face a big hole as they lost in overtime to Edmonton and are now down 0-3 in their second round series.

Stankoven named BCMML MVP:

-Kamloops Blazers signed prospect and 2018 WHL Bantam Draft first round pick Logan Stankoven was named MVP of the BCMML. He had the most points (103), goals (49) and assists (54) in the BCMML in just 38 games.

Also named to the MML All-Star team was Spokane Chiefs signed blue line prospect and 2018 first round pick Graham Sward. The d-man put up 26 points in 32 games with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Nolan Maier (Saskatoon) – 26-save shutout for the Blades netminder as they took Game 3 by a 1-0 score and now trail in their series with Prince Albert 2-1.
  2. Dylan Myskiw (Edmonton) – He stopped 24-of-25 and was a huge reason the Oil Kings were able to steal an overtime road win in Calgary 2-1 and take a 3-0 series lead.
  3. Owen Hardy (Vancouver) – The two-way forward had two goals, including the overtime winner as the Giants edged the Royals 5-4 and took a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Honorable mentions:

Kirby Dach scored the game’s only goal in the Blades’ Game 3 win… Edmonton’s Wyatt McLeod powered home the overtime winner. The goal was his second of the playoffs… Zach Rusell had two points in the Oil Kings win… Mitchell Prowse had a goal and an assist in the loss for the Royals…
