Korczak signs with Golden Knights

Kelowna Rockets defenseman Kaedan Korczak has signed his entry-level contract with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. A second-round pick of the Golden Knights in this past June’s NHL Entry Draft, Korczak is just five points shy of matching his career-high 33 points from last season through just 32 games this season. There are now 16 unsigned WHL players from the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Teams have until June 1, 2021, to sign those players.

Hofer hurts hand in practice

Portland Winterhawks goaltender Joel Hofer appeared to hurt his hand while practicing with the Canadian Junior team on Saturday. He took a shot off his glove hand and did require attention but stayed on the ice and returned to full participation. Canada will conclude their pre-tournament action on Monday against Finland.

Thomson to captain Finnish junior team

Speaking of those Finns, Lassi Thomson (63 GP, 17 G, 24 A with the Kelowna Rockets in 2018-19) has been named Captain of Team Finland for the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship. Thomson has been playing professionally in Finland this year where he has six goals and four assists in 23 games.

Harkins records point in NHL debut

Jansen Harkins (275 GP, 75 G, 167 A with the Prince George Cougars from 2012-17) tallied his first NHL point in his first NHL game with the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. A second-round pick of the Jets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Harkins has primarily spent his pro career with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose but did have a short six-game stint with the ECHL’s Jacksonville IceMen.

Clague makes NHL debut

Kale Clague (195 GP, 26 G, 141 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings and Moose Jaw Warriors from 2013-18) made his NHL debut for the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres. The Kings drafted Clague in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and he’s been playing with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, an affiliate of the Kings.

Barzal suits up for 200th NHL game

Mathew Barzal (202 GP, 63 G, 215 A with the Seattle Thunderbirds from 2013-17) played in his 200th NHL game on Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks. Drafted in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, Barzal has 55 goals and 122 assists in his career which has been spent entirely in New York.
