Point, Johnson, Schenn, and Foote win Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay

Brayden Point (134 goals, 190 assists in 252 games with Moose Jaw from 2012-16), Tyler Johnson (128 goals, 154 assists in 266 games with Spokane from 2007-11), Luke Schenn (12 goals, 56 assists in 189 games with Kelowna from 2005-08), and Cal Foote (33 goals, 130 assists in 202 games with Kelowna from 2015-18) of the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens in game five.

It’s the second straight season the Lightning has hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup, and Point, Johnson, and Schenn were all members of Tampa Bay’s winning team last year as well.

The Lightning also has a plethora of WHL alumni in its front office, including assistant general managers Jamie Pushor (nine goals, 52 assists in 204 games with Lethbridge from 1989-93) and Stacy Roest (141 goals, 268 assists in 290 games with Medicine Hat from 1991-95).

Bardsley jumps to Philadelphia Flyers scouting staff

Matt Bardsley, who stepped down as Kamloops Blazers general manager in May, has been hired by the Philadelphia Flyers as a regional scout.

The 49-year-old left the Blazers to move back to the United States to be closer to family. Per Jon Keen’s tweet above, he’ll be based out of Portland to scout for the Flyers.

Bardsley spent 21 years working in the WHL, for Portland from 1999 to 2018, and then Kamloops from 2018 until this past season.

Goethals joins Spokane as Manitoba regional scout

Ryan Goethals announced on Wednesday that he will join the Spokane Chiefs as their Manitoba regional scout.

In 2020-21, he was a scout for the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League as well as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the US Hockey League.

He will remain with the Ice Wolves as a scout in 2021-22.

Quebec and Saint John to vie for 2022 Memorial Cup

The Canadian Hockey League unveiled on Wednesday that the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts and Saint John Sea Dogs have each put in their respective bids to host the 2022 Memorial Cup.

The tournament is set for June 3-12 next year after this year and last year’s Memorial Cup was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kelowna was due to be the host in 2020 while either Oshawa or Sault Ste. Marie in the OHL was scheduled to host this past May.

Hanas added to USA’s World Junior Summer Showcase roster

Portland Winterhawks forward Cross Hanas has been added to the Team USA roster for the upcoming World Junior Summer Showcase.

The 2002-born product of Highland Village, TX notched four points in six games with the Winterhawks this past season. He also had 16 points in 27 games while on loan to the USHL’s Lincoln Stars.

Krutil returns to Rockford for 2021-22

Defenseman Michael Krutil signed an American Hockey League contract with the Rockford IceHogs for the 2021-22 season on Wednesday.

The 2002-born blueliner was the Kelowna Rockets first-round pick, 24th overall, in the 2020 CHL Import Draft. The native of Praha, CZE put up three assists in 21 AHL games in 2020-21.

He also split last season between HC Sparta Praha U20 and HC Stadion Litomerice in the Czech Republic, as well as the Czech national junior team.

Eberle inks an extension with Sheffield

Forward Tanner Eberle (80 goals, 92 assists in 270 games with Moose Jaw from 2010-15) signed an extension with the Sheffield Steelers of the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League.

The 27-year-old Reginan spent the last three seasons with the Steelers, putting up 45 goals and 97 points in 122 games.

Gernat goes from the Czech Republic to Switzerland

Defenseman Martin Gernat (12 goals, 56 assists in 83 games with Edmonton from 2011-13) inked a deal with Lausanne HC in Switzerland’s National League for 2021-22.

Gernat, a 28-year-old from Kosice, SVK, had 27 goals, and 95 points in 148 games with HC Ocelari Trinec in the Czech Tipsport Extraliga over the last three seasons.

Palivko signs with Admiral Vladivostok

Defenseman Danila Palivko (four goals, 32 assists in 123 games with Lethbridge from 2018-20) signed with Admiral Vladivostok of the Kontinental Hockey League for 2021-22.

Palivko, who’s from Novopolotsk, BLR, had two goals and eight points in 48 games with Neman Grodno in the Belarusian Extraleague A this past season.

Ferraro nominated for Canadian Screen Award as best sports analyst

TSN broadcaster Ray Ferraro (149 goals, 133 assists in 122 games with Portland and Brandon from 1982-84) is nominated for a 2021 Canadian Screen Award in the best sports analyst category.

The 56-year-old from Trail, BC was nominated for his analysis as colour commentator on the TSN broadcast of the gold medal game at the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championship.
