Four WHL players selected in the first round of the NHL Draft

The first round of the NHL Draft went down on Friday night, with four players who skated in the WHL during the 2020-21 season being selected.

  • Edmonton Oil Kings forward Dylan Guenther (9th overall to Arizona Coyotes)
  • Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Sebastian Cossa (15th overall to Detroit Red Wings)
  • Winnipeg ICE defenseman Carson Lambos (26th overall to Minnesota Wild)
  • Prince Albert Raiders defenseman Nolan Allan (32nd overall to Chicago Blackhawks)

Hurricanes sign import forward Repcik

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced on Friday the signing of 2004-born forward Peter Repcik, who was their second pick, 115th overall, in this year’s 2021 CHL Import Draft.

Repcik, who’s from Kosice, SVK, posted nine goals and 24 points in 27 games with Slovakia U18 of Slovenská hokejová liga, which is the second-tier junior league in Slovakia.

Jones traded from Columbus to Chicago

Defenseman Seth Jones (14 goals, 42 assists in 61 games with Portland in 2012-13) was traded in the NHL from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Chicago Blackhawks in a blockbuster trade on Friday.

He then signed an eight-year contract extension with the Blackhawks worth $9.5 million per season that kicks in with the 2022-23 season. Jones, 26, is a veteran of 580 NHL games with Columbus and Nashville, compiling 65 goals and 286 points.

Bean goes from Carolina to Columbus

Defenseman Jake Bean (49 goals, 147 assists in 219 games with Calgary and Tri-City from 2014-18) is now a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets after being traded by the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday in exchange for the 44th overall pick in this weekend’s NHL Draft.

The 23-year-old from Calgary, AB has played 44 games with the Canes over the last two seasons and posted a goal and 11 assists.

Fram inks an extension in Beijing

Defenseman Jason Fram (32 goals, 155 assists in 308 games with Spokane from 2011-16) has signed an extension with Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League for 2021-22.

The 26-year-old from Vancouver, BC spent the last two seasons with Kunlun, posting eight goals and 13 points in 46 games. He also added eight points in 18 games with KRS-BSU Beijing of the Vysshaya Hokkeinaya Liga in 2019-20.

McNulty goes from Hungary to Great Britain

26-year-old defenseman Marc McNulty (43 goals, 93 assists in 264 games with Prince George, Kamloops, and Moose Jaw from 2012-16) has signed with the Manchester Storm of the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League for the 2021-22 season.

McNulty, who hails from Medicine Hat, AB, skated in 35 games with Hungary’s Fehérvári Titánok of Erste Liga in 2020-21 and notched five goals and 24 points. It was his first season playing in Europe after four years of U SPORTS hockey at Acadia University.

Bartley returns to Kunlun after one season away

After one season playing with Unia Oswiecim of Poland’s Polska Hokej Liga, defenseman Victor Bartley (36 goals, 132 assists in 336 games with Kamloops and Regina) has signed with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL for the 2021-22 season.

The 33-year-old native of Ottawa, ON had six assists in nine games in Poland last season. He put up 23 points in 104 games with Kunlun from 2018 to 2020.
