Hurricanes and Chiefs make a deal

The Lethbridge Hurricanes sent the rights to 2005-born defenseman Ethan Overman to the Spokane Chiefs for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2023 WHL Draft. The 15-year-old American was added to the Hurricanes protected list after not being drafted.

Last season, as a San Diego Saints U15 AAA team member, Overman scored eight goals and added 21 assists through 37 games.

Rabbit calls it a career

Following a 15-year professional playing career, 34-year-old Wacey Rabbit (91 goals, 131 assists in 289 games with Saskatoon and Vancouver 2001-07) has decided to announce his retirement.

Rabbit was selected in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins.

Last season, Rabbit was the captain of the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen. In 46 games he scored seven times and added 21 assists.

Dube re-signs with Flames

23-year-old, Golden, BC forward Dillon Dube (101 goals, 131 assists in 203 games with Kelowna 2013-18) has re-signed with the Calgary Flames. His deal is for three years.

Dube, selected in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Flames, played 51 games with the team in 2020-21. He scored 11 goals and added 11 assists.

Valiyev signs with Ak Bars Kazan

26-year-old Nizhnekamsk, RUS defenceman Rinat Valiyev (14 goals, 60 assists in 107 games with Kootenay 2013-15) has signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.

Valiyev did not play in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He last played in 2019-20 with the AHL’s Stockton Heat. He scored two goals and added eight assists.

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Valiyev in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft. He earned 12 games of NHL experience.

Komets sign Baldwin

30-year-old Winnipeg, MB defenceman Corbin Baldwin (11 goals, 55 assists in 248 games with Spokane 2008-12) has signed with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL.

Baldwin played the 2020-21 season with the Kansas City Mavericks, where he had one assist in 28 games.

Rush sign Nelson

27-year-old, Rogers, MN forward Logan Nelson (60 goals, 99 assists in 179 games with Victoria 2011-14) has signed with the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL.

Nelson, a former 2012 fifth-round NHL Draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres, spent the 2020-21 season with the Birmingham Bulls of the SPHL. He scored 13 goals and had 36 assists in 39 games.

Ranford signs with Steelers

29-year-old Edmonton, AB forward Brendan Ranford (137 goals, 220 assists in 348 games with Kamloops 2007-13) has signed with the Bietigheim Steelers of the DEL.

Last season Ranford played 29 games with HC Slovan Bratislava, where he scored 12 goals and added 20 assists.

Ranford was selected in the seventh round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He played in one NHL game with the Dallas Stars in 2014-15.

Leier joins Tigers

27-year-old forward Taylor Leier (77 goals, 101 assists in 198 games with Portland 2011-14) has signed with the Straubing Tigers of the DEL.

Leier, from Saskatoon, SK, split the 2020-21 season between HC Ocelari Trinec (Czech league, 10 games, 1 goal, 4 assists) and Adler Manheim (DEL, 20 games, 5 goals, 5 assists).

The Philadelphia Flyers selected Leier in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He has 55 games of NHL experience.

Reinhart joins Roosters

27-year-old, West Vancouver, BC defenceman Griffin Reinhart (30 goals, 81 assists in 209 games with Edmonton 2009-14) has signed with the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL.

Last season while with the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, Reinhart registered two assists through 33 games.

Reinhart was a first-round selection of the New York Islanders in 2012, and he earned 37 games of NHL experience with the Islanders and Edmonton Oilers.

Dudas signs in Poland

33-year-old St. Albert, AB defenceman Jesse Dudas (11 goals, 82 assists in 175 games with Lethbridge, Prince George, Swift Current, and Regina 2003-09) has signed with Unia Oswiecim in Poland.

Dudas did not play in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He last played in 2019-20 with DVTK Jegesmedvek in Slovakia (34 games, 5 goals, 14 assists) and HC Vitkovice (10 games, 0 goals, 4 assists).

The Columbus Blue Jackets selected Dudas in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Draft.

Stukel joins HC Pustertal

24-year-old Surrey, BC forward Jakob Stukel (103 goals, 94 assists in 265 games with Vancouver and Calgary 2012-18) has signed with HC Pustertal, an Italian team in the ICEHL.

Stukel split the 2020-21 season between VEU Feldkirch of AlpsHL, where he scored 22 goals and had 18 assists in 20 games, and the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, where he scored four goals and added three assists in 35 games.

Stukel was a sixth-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks at the 2016 NHL Draft.
