Chan returns to Edmonton as director of scouting

The Edmonton Oil Kings announced the addition of Michael Chan as their new director of scouting on Thursday.

Chan, 29, spent 2020-21 as the video coach for the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies. He was the Oil Kings’ video coach and hockey operations coordinator from 2017-20.

Oil Kings promote three from area scouts to travelling scouts

The Oil Kings also unveiled the promotion of Jamie Novakoski, Nels Eckland, and Del Reid from area scouts to travelling scouts on Thursday.

Per a news release, Edmonton president of hockey operations and general manager Kirt Hill noted the promotions come as preparation for the two WHL Prospect Drafts this upcoming season.

Strand re-ups with the Kings

Defenseman Austin Strand (40 goals, 82 assists in 268 games with Red Deer and Seattle from 2014-18) has signed a one-year, two-way extension with the Los Angeles Kings.

Strand, a 24-year-old from Calgary, AB, notched one assist in 13 games with the Kings this past season. He also added five points in 19 games with the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League.

Klotz agrees on an extension with Rapid City

Forward Garrett Klotz (five goals, five assists in 150 games with Red Deer and Saskatoon from 2005-08) signed an extension for the 2021-22 season with the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL.

The 32-year-old Reginian is a veteran of 282 career ECHL games, including three of the last four seasons with the Rush. He had six points in 52 games with Rapid City in 2020-21.

Kanzig joins EC Salzburg for 2021-22

Twenty-six year old Keegan Kanzig (19 goals, 40 assists in 319 games with Victoria and Calgary from 2011-16) has signed with EC Salzburg of the ICE Hockey League for the upcoming season.

The defenseman from Athabasca, AB was scoreless in six games with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls in 2020-21. He’s spent most of his pro career in the ECHL.

Yellow Horn takes his game to Scotland

Brocket, AB product Colton Yellow Horn (153 goals, 196 assists in 330 games with Lethbridge and Tri-City from 2003-08) has signed with the Glasgow Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom for 2021-22.

The 34-year-old spent 2020-21 with SC Csíkszereda in Romania and posted 21 goals and 65 points in 46 games.
