Daily Dose of the Dub: Alberta, Saskatchewan advance at CWG; 16 WHL alumni honoured by Canada West

Canada Winter Games

Day 5 (Quarter-Finals): Alberta defeated New Brunswick 8-3, Saskatchewan doubled up Nova Scotia 6-3, BC was eliminated by Quebec with a 7-3 loss, and Manitoba was eliminated by Ontario with a 6-3 loss.

Alberta:

  •  Edmonton Oil Kings prospect Dylan Guenther had a goal and two assists.
  •  Prince Albert Raiders prospect Tyson Laventure had two goals.
  •  Prince George Cougars prospect Craig Armstrong had two goals.

Smith skates in 300th

Spokane Chiefs forward Luc Smith skated in his 300th WHL game in Saturday’s loss to Tri-City. The Stony Plain native was acquired in a trade from Kamloops in November and has 44 points (25G, 19A) in 52 games this season. Between Regina, Kamloops and Spokane, he has 125 points (64G, 61A) in the 300 games.

Dubinsky hits 800 games

Former Portland Winterhawk Brandon Dubinsky skated in his 800th NHL game in a 3-2 loss to Montreal yesterday. The former New York Ranger and current Columbus Blue Jacket has 435 points (152G, 283A) in his NHL career. In four seasons with Portland (2002-06), he skated in 234 WHL games, recording 230 points (82G, 148A).

Rasmussen returning?

With Michael Rasmussen rotating in the fourth line in practice, rumours are circulating about the potential of him being returned to the Tri-City Americans. Last year’s Americans captain has 15 points (7G, 8A) in 48 games with the Detroit Red Wings this season. If he is returned back to junior before Monday’s NHL trade deadline, he will be eligible to play in the AHL Playoffs for the Red Wings’ affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 161 games with Tri-City, he was just under a point per game with 157 points (81G, 76A).

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Brandon Wheat Kings captain Stelio Mattheos had two goals and two assists in a 5-1 win over Calgary.

2nd Star: Brandon’s Cole Reinhardt also had two goals and two assists in their win over the Hitmen.

3rd Star: Regina’s Brady Pouteau had a goal and an assist in a 5-4 shootout win over Kootenay.

Honourable Mentions

Regina’s Dean McNabb stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief to help the Pats to a shootout win over the ICE….Brandon’s Zach Wytinck had two assists….
