WHL makes COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory

The Western Hockey League announced on Monday that it is implementing a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for the 2021-22 season. The policy applies to all players and people who “interact directly and on a regular basis with players.”

They must be fully vaccinated with a Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccine no later than 14 days before the start of the season, which is Oct. 1.

Broncos and Royals swap defensemen

The Swift Current Broncos have acquired 2002-born defenseman Noah Lamb from the Victoria Royals for 2003-born defenseman Devin Aubin and a sixth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

Lamb, who’s from Edmonton, AB, has four assists in 59 games with the Royals over the last three seasons. Aubin is Falher, AB product who posted a goal and three assists in 21 games with the Broncos as a rookie in 2020-21.

Cowan signs with the Winnipeg ICE

The Winnipeg ICE has signed 2005-born goaltender Dawson Cowan of Warren, MB to a WHL standard player agreement. Cowan was 2-0 with a 2.09 goals-against-average and a .948 save percentage in a pair of games with the Interlake Lightning of the Manitoba U18 AAA League in 2020-21.

McCambridge is back with the G-Men in 2021-22

Thompson, MB product Keith McCambridge (six goals, 33 assists in 282 games with Swift Current and Kamloops from 1991-95) is back behind the bench of the Vancouver Giants for the 2021-22 WHL season.

McCambridge, 47, was an associate coach for the G-Men in 2020-21 after coaching in the American Hockey League with Manitoba, St. John’s, and Hartford from 2009-19.

Schaufler commits to Grant MacEwan College

Defenseman Loeden Schaufler (three goals, 11 assists in 112 games with Kootenay, Seattle, Prince Albert, and Edmonton from 2017-20) has committed to Grant MacEwan College of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

Schaufler, a native of Dewinton, AB, spent 2020-21 with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and posted 13 assists in 16 games.

Watts inks a deal in Wichita

22-year-old Brayden Watts (68 goals, 93 assists in 315 games with Moose Jaw, Vancouver, and Prince Albert from 2015-20) has signed an extension with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder for 2021-22. The product of Bakersfield, CA put up 10 goals and 30 points in 62 games as a rookie pro with the Thunder during the 2020-21 season.

Kolusz signs with Podhale Nowy Targ

Limanowa, POL product Marcin Kolusz (six goals, 12 assists in 64 games with Vancouver in 2003-04) has signed a contract with Podhale Nowy Targ of the Polska Hokej Liga for 2021-22.

The 36-year-old defenseman chipped in three assists in 14 games with HK Dukla Michalovce in Slovakia during 2020-21. Kolusz also had two assists in nine games with Vaasan Sport of Finland’s Liiga.
