Sutter steps down as Rebels head coach

Following a tough start to the truncated WHL season, Red Deer Rebels Head Coach Brent Sutter has stepped down from his coaching role with the team.

Sutter was in his 17th season as Rebels head coach. In 1,024 regular-season games, he compiled a 526-384-114 record and in 152 WHL playoff games has a record of 80-73.

Larson scores first WHL goal

Red Deer Rebels 2004-born forward Jhett Larson scored his first WHL goal on Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Larson opened the scoring at 6:01 of the first period. The Rebels selected Larson in the eighth round of the 2018 WHL Draft, he was playing in his eighth game.

Cheveldayoff scores first WHL goal

Spokane Chiefs 2003-born forward Ty Cheveldayoff scored his first WHL goal in a 7-6 loss to the Portland Winterhawks. Cheveldayoff scored at 19:24 of the third period to make the score 7-5. The undrafted rookie was playing in his eighth WHL game.

Melnyk scores first WHL goal

Tri-City Americans 2004-born forward Rhett Melnyk scored his first WHL goal in a 6-2 win over the Everett Silvertips. Melnyk’s goal came at 5:52 of the second period and proved to be the eventual game-winner. Melnyk, a 2019 second-round WHL Draft pick of the Americans, was playing in his 10th WHL game.

Friedt-Mohr scores first WHL goal

Spokane Chiefs 2003-born defenseman Chase Friedt-Mohr scored his first WHL goal in a 7-6 loss to the Portland Winterhawks. Friedt-Mohr scored at 19:59 of the third period to make the score 7-6. The Chiefs selected Friedt-Mohr in the fifth round of the 2018 WHL Draft. He was playing in his ninth game.

Thornton scores first WHL goal

Prince George Cougars 2003-born forward Hudson Thornton scored his first WHL goal last night in a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Giants. His goal came at 9:55 of the third period to give the Cougars a 5-2 lead. The Cougars selected Thornton in the second round of the 2018 WHL draft. He was playing in his first WHL game.

Spurgeon signs extension with ESV Kaufbeuren

Forward Tyler Spurgeon (212GP, 43G, 81A with Kelowna ’01-’06) has signed a contract extension with DEL2 team ESV Kaufbeuren. Spurgeon had 23 goals and 32 assists through 50 games as the team’s captain in 2020-21. The Edmonton Oilers selected Spurgeon in the eighth round of the 2004 NHL Draft. Won two Ed Chynoweth Cups with the Rockets in 02-03 and 04-05. Also won the 2003-04 Memorial Cup.

Dubnyk acquired by Avalanche

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk (192GP, 83-87-14, 2.69GAA, .912sv% with Kamloops ’01-’06) has been acquired by the Colorado Avalanche from the San Jose Sharks. Dubnyk has played 17 games this season and has a 3-9-2 record with a 3.18 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. Was named 2003-04 WHL and CHL Scholastic Player of the Year and participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game that season. Was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2004 NHL Draft.
