Red Deer Rebels Alumni Updates – North American Pro Leagues

With the holiday break happening for leagues around the world, it is a good time to update fans of the hockey club on their former players. Included are all players who donned a Rebels jersey at any point in their career.

This list is up-to-date as of December 23, 2019.

Alexander Alexeyev – Hershey Bears

Alexeyev has played in all 30 of the Bears games this season, collecting one goal and adding 12 assists. He has three assists in his last six games. His first professional goal came in his first AHL game on October 5th.

Conner Bleackley – Idaho Steelheads

Bleackley has scored twice this season, including a game winner for the ECHL Steelheads. He has added seven assists, playing in just 13 games. Bleackley is a former first-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche.

Brayden Burke – Tucson Roadrunners

Burke earned himself a four-day call-up to the Arizona Coyotes but did not see any game action. With the Roadrunners, Burke has been a point-per-game player with 12 goals and 14 assists. He played just three games with the Rebels.

Jake DeBrusk – Boston Bruins

The third-year NHLer has 17 points this season on eight goals and nine assists over 32 games with the Bruins. DeBrusk played on the Memorial Cup host Rebels in 2015-16.

Kayle Doetzel – Allen Americans

Having spent the last three seasons splitting time between the AHL Stockton Heat and the ECHL, Doetzel enters his first season as a member of the Americans. He has four assists in 26 games with the club.

Matt Dumba – Minnesota Wild

With six seasons already under his belt, the Minnesota Wild defenseman has three goals and seven assists in 37 games in 2019-2020. Last season, Dumba was held to just 32 games as he dealt with an injury.

Turner Elson – Grand Rapids Griffins

Elson is playing his third season with the Griffins and has collected 11 points (3G, 8A) in 31 games this season. He has just one NHL game of experience to go with 335 in the AHL with the Griffins, Heat, and Rampage.

Haydn Fleury – Carolina Hurricanes

Fleury scored his first NHL goal this season following a 95 game drought. He now has two goals and two assists in 19 games this season.

Byron Froese – Stockton Heat

Froese hit the holiday break on a three-game assist streak (3A). He has only been held off the scoresheet in six of his 21 games, piling up nine goals and nine assists in that time. The Heat are Froese’s seventh AHL team. He also has 110 games of NHL experience with three teams.

Brandon Hagel – DUBNetwork

Brandon Hagel – Rockford IceHogs

In his first full season with the IceHogs, Hagel is third in team scoring with nine goals and six assists. He has twice collected a goal and an assist in the same game for the third-place team in the AHL’s Central Division.

Martin Hanzal – Dallas Stars

After playing in just seven games last season, Hanzal remains on the shelf with a back injury that has derailed his career. He has played 673 NHL games with the Coyotes, Wild, and Stars. He has 126 goals and 211 assists in his career.

Jordan Henry – Brampton Beast 

Henry was named captain of the Beast this season, his fifth with the ECHL club. In 17 games this season, Henry has collected four goals and one assist. He has 70 goals and 110 assists in 346 games at the ECHL level and has also played 307 AHL games.

Reese Johnson-Liam Keeler (Andy Devlin)

Reese Johnson – Rockford IceHogs

Last season’s captain has four goals and four assists in 25 games with the IceHogs this season. He had four assists in six games for the IceHogs following the end of the 2018-19 Rebels season after going undrafted and receiving an entry-level NHL contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Garrett Klotz – Utah Grizzlies

The 6-foot-6 Klotz has spent the majority of his professional career in the ECHL. The Grizzlies are his 10th team in that league. He played for four different teams in the 2017-18 season. With the Grizzlies this season, Klotz has three goals and two assists in six games.

Darcy Kuemper – Arizona Coyotes

The now injured Kuemper has made 25 appearances for the Coyotes this season, compiling a 15-8-0-2 record. He has a 2.17 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. Arizona is tied for first in the tight Pacific Division.

Josh Mahura – Anaheim Ducks

The season has been split between the NHL Ducks and the AHL Gulls. With the NHL club, Mahura opened his season with a three-assist effort on October 29th. He has since recorded one goal in 10 games. With the Gulls, he has recorded four assists in 13 games.

Nelson Nogier – Manitoba Moose

Nogier has played in all 33 games for the Moose and has registered six assists. This is Nogier’s fourth season with the Moose. He has 180 games of AHL experience and three goals and 26 assists.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Edmonton Oilers

Playing in his ninth NHL season, the first overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft has 572 games of experience at hockey’s top level. In that time, ‘Nuge’ has collected 153 goals and 248 assists. This season, he has seven goals and 13 assists.

Lane Pederson – Tucson Roadrunners

The third-year Roadrunner leads the team in scoring with 28 points in 28 games. He has 14 goals and 14 assists. Following a four-game point drought, Pederson has put up five points in his last three games.

Alexander Petrovic – Providence Bruins

After spending the last four seasons in the NHL full time, Petrovic was signed by the Boston Bruins and sent to their AHL affiliate. With Providence, he has scored twice and added 17 assists. He is the highest-scoring Bruins defenseman.

Luke Philp – Stockton Heat

In a rare move, Philp attended the University of Alberta for the past three seasons before signing a contract with the Calgary Flames. With the AHL Heat, he has played in 25 games, posting 13 goals and three assists.

Evan Polei – San Antonio Rampage

After becoming a free agent in the off-season, Polei signed with the St. Louis Blues and went to their AHL affiliate after three seasons in the Edmonton Oilers organization. In 19 games this season, he as a goal and three assists.

Kristian Reichel – Manitoba Moose

In his second professional season, Reichel has seen just 12 games of action with the Moose this year. He has two goals and an assist.

James Reimer – Carolina Hurricanes

In his 12th professional season, Reimer is now with his fourth NHL team. This season, he has appeared in 15 games with a 8-5-0-0 record. He has a 2.51 goals against average and a .921 save percentage.

Michael Spacek

Michael Spacek – Manitoba Moose

His play, combined with injuries to players with the NHL club, earned Spacek a call-up earlier this season but he did not see any game action. With the AHL affiliate, he has played in 19 games, scoring three times and adding four assists.

Austin Strand – Ontario Reign

Strand is in his second professional season, both with the Reign. This season over 25 games, the Calgary native has five goals and six assists.

Brandon Sutter – Vancouver Canucks

Sutter has amassed 705 games of NHL experience and an ‘A’ with the Canucks for the second season in a row. This season in 22 games, Sutter has five goals and three assists.

Brett Sutter – Ontario Reign

The former Rebels captain has played in 843 AHL games. With his fifth team, Sutter has racked up two goals and 11 assists in the 2019-2020 season. Sutter has also appeared in 60 NHL games.
