On this day in Rebels history – March 18

2001

With just two games left in the season, the Rebels took on the Calgary Hitmen. Heading down Highway 2, the Rebels were putting the finishing touches on a 54 win season. With seven different scorers, Red Deer won the game 8-3. Ross Lupaschuk led the way with two tallies. Colby Armstrong, Andrew Bergen, Justin Mapletoft, Jeff Smith, Doug Lynch, and Kyle Wanvig had the other goals for the Rebels. Martin Erat had three assists.

2006

Once again the Rebels meet their neighbours to the south, the Hitmen. 2005-06 was not a great season for Red Deer as they missed the playoffs. The team did have something to cheer about on the way to the end of the season as they took a 2-1 shootout victory. Pierre-Paul Lamoureux scored in regulation for Red Deer, Ryan Letts has the goal for Calgary. James Reimer made 37 saves for Red Deer, Justin Pogge had 28. Only one goal was scored in the shootout and that was from Brandon Sutter. He was the first shooter for the Rebels.

2011

Playing their second last game of the season, the Rebels were in a tight race for the division title. With their 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings, Red Deer gave themselves a better chance to hang another banner from the rafters in Westerner Park. Byron Froese scored twice including the game-winner. Colin Archer and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added single tallies and Darcy Kuemper made 28 saves on 31 shots.

2014

In a game dubbed “Super Tuesday”, the Rebels took to home ice against the Prince Albert Raiders. It was a WHL playoff play-in game as the Rebels and Raiders tied with 75 points following the conclusion of the regular season. It was heartbreak on home ice as Prince Albert took the game 5-3. Wyatt Johnson, Rhyse Dieno, and Evan Polei scored a goal each but it was not enough. Prince Albert had goals from five different players and 27 saves from Nick McBride. Patrik Bartosak had 42 saves in the loss.

2015

As Memorial Cup hosts, the Rebels battled all season long to win their difficult division. On this night, with three games remaining in the regular season, the Rebels took on the Calgary Hitmen. 3-2 was the final score after the Hitmen scored in overtime. Connor Rankin scored the goal to end the game. Red Deer had goals from Colton Bobyk and Riley Sheen. Rylan Toth made 29 saves.

2017
