Giants nab Red Wings Prospect from Hurricanes

The Vancouver Giants announced a second trade on Friday afternoon, this time acquiring Detroit Red Wings prospect Alex Cotton from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round, fifth-round, and a sixth-round 2022 WHL Prospects Draft pick, as well as a fourth-round 2023 WHL Prospects Draft pick and the WHL rights to 2005-born defenseman Hunter McInnes.

Cotton, 20, was selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round (99th overall) in the 2016 WHL Draft. The Detroit Red Wings prospect skated in 154 career regular-season games with the ‘Canes totaling 110 points (33g-77a) along with 100 penalty minutes. The Langley, British Columbia product finished his Hurricanes career eighth all-time in franchise points by a defenseman and fifth all-time in franchise goals by a defenseman. The Red Wings selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Cotton has four goals and two assists through eight games this season.

“It’s always hard to trade key members of your team, especially someone like Alex who has been a big part of our organization for many years but we are excited to add a good prospect to our 2005-born group and the four draft picks,” said Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt.

“We want to thank Alex for all of his contributions over his time with the Hurricanes and wish him all the best in his future,” added Anholt.

McInnes, 16, from Nanaimo, BC has not yet played in the WHL after being selected in the ninth round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft by the Giants. This season, he has three assists through eight games with St. George’s School U18 Prep.
