Giants Ink 2005-Born Forward Matthew Edwards

Tuesday, April 26 will be a memorable one for Matthew Edwards, a 2005-born forward from the prairies. Edward’s becomes the newest addition to the Vancouver Giants after signing a Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreement yesterday.

Originally selected by the Giants in Round 4 (76th overall) in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, he became the fourth player from the 2005 draft class to sign with the G-men. Mazden Leslie (Round 1), Ty Halaburda (Round 2), and Ethan Semeniuk (Round 3 round out the group.

“Matthew’s transition to junior hockey was successful this season, and we’re excited for him to begin the next stage of his development with the Vancouver Giants,” adds Barclay Parneta in a Giants interview. “With his size and skill-set, he’ll be a strong addition to our current group of 2005-born players.”

Edwards, a right-handed shot, checks in at 6’2” and 195-pounds. This season, Edwards suited up in 43 games with the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals and picked up three goals, and grabbed three assists to go along with 42 penalty minutes. He appeared in four additional playoff games for his BCHL team earlier this month.

“I couldn’t be more excited to begin the next chapter of my junior hockey career with the Vancouver Giants,” said Matthew Edwards who spoke to the Vancouver Giants. “I’m grateful to the Vancouver Giants organization for the opportunity, and I’m looking forward to training camp and competing for a roster spot next season.”

The 2021-2022 season is still ongoing for the Giants who look to take a 2-1 series lead at home against the Everett Silvertips. Vancouver took the first game in a 5-4 overtime victory that saw Adam Hall record a hat trick and was the first game back from a long-lasting injury for Vancouver’s star goaltender, Jesper Vikman. Vikman’s appearance was the first since March 4 and the highly praised Goaltender did not disappoint making 34 stops on the night. Game 2 was won 7-3 by Everett and Jesper Vikman did not dress.

Tonight’s game is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
