Chiefs take Game 1 of a back-to-back vs. Giants

Saturday at the Langley Events Centre marked game 61 for the Vancouver Giants who took on the Spokane Chiefs. The game was the third of the season against Spokane and kickstarted a back-to-back weekend between each other.

Before the game, the Giants and Chiefs had both taken two points from the first two games as both teams held a 1-1 record. It was the Giants who took Game 1 thanks to a 3-1 victory back on November 27th, but the Giants dropped the second meeting by a 5-2 score on March 9th. With a chance to continue the push towards the playoffs the Giants were looking to take the third meeting of the season.

The Giants got off to a good start as Jaden Lipinski went five-hole on Mason Beaupit for his seventh goal of the season. The goal gave his team a 1-0 lead at the 10:33 mark.

Lipinski scored his second of the evening and eighth of the season to double Vancouver’s lead at 12:34. Lipinski made it 2-0 and that score favored Vancouver heading into the second period.

Spokane saw two players put pucks in the net during the middle frame. Chase Bertholet scored his 22nd of the season and Ty Cheveldayoff potted his eighth. The game was tied at 2 heading into the third period.

With a chance to take a 3-2 lead on the Power Play the Chiefs made no mistake as Nick McCarry struck for his 19th goal of the season. Spokane took the lead with that goal and wouldn’t look back.

Ty Cheveldayoff scored his second goal of the game and 9th of the season to give the Chiefs a 4-2 lead. A Giants penalty helped the Chiefs steal the show on the man-advantage and Spokane would get their fifth and final goal to seal the deal into an empty net.

With the loss, Vancouver now has a record of 23-34-4-0 which equates to 50 points and is good for sixth in the Western Conference. The Giants have seven games remaining in their regular season schedule and will need to secure victories in a good portion of those games as they continue the push towards the playoffs.
