Candidates to wear the “C” for the Giants in 2021-22

Now that Alex Kannok Leipert has aged out, the Giants will have a new captain in the 2021-22 season. In this article, we look at four players that could help fill that leadership role next year. Whoever is awarded the “C” will have to follow great players like Craig Cunningham, Tyler Benson, Brett Festerling, and Kannok Leipert.

Justin Sourdif

If he does not make the Florida Panthers next season, Sourdif would be an excellent captain. He leads by example, has become one of the best players in the WHL, and last year, he was named to the B.C. Division All-Star Team. Lastly, he should be on Team Canada at the World Juniors this coming December. A lot is expected from Sourdif this year as he will be looked on to drive the offence. Sourdif knows what it means to be a Giant on and off the ice and could fill that leadership role.

Connor Horning

Connor Horning should occupy one of the three overage spots next season. He really stepped up last campaign and was a big reason the Giants penalty kill was near the top of the league. This is a guy that young players can look up to. A player that is calm on the ice and doesn’t make many mistakes, Horning should be part of the 2021-22 leadership group.

Marko Stacha

Yes, he was a rookie last season, but Marko Stacha brings a lot of experience to the table. He has played at two world juniors for Slovakia and even has experience playing in men’s leagues. Last season, he was really impressed with his strength in the defensive zone. He is a guy who has a lot of energy and is loving life in North America. A player fans are gonna love next season once the Giants return home.

Tanner Brown

There is an interesting case to be made when it comes to Tanner Brown. He often flies under the radar but has become a staple on the blueline the last few seasons. This will be his fifth year with the club. Every year, he has improved, culminating in a 10-point campaign with a +11 rating during the bubble. He lays everything out on the ice game after game and should be considered for next season’s leadership position.

A Big Responsibility

As mentioned, being named Giants captain is a big responsibility. You need to lead by example and be a role model to your teammates and the community. Based on this roster, the Giants should have no problem finding a player like that. A player that can step into the big shoes left behind by Kannok Leipert and lead this team to another successful season.
