Daily Dose of the DUB: Oil Kings player signing, McDonald joins Raiders coaching staff and more

Oil Kings sign Heward

The Edmonton Oil Kings announced on Thursday that the team has signed defenseman Blake Heward to a WHL Standard Player Agreement. Heward was originally a 2018 seventh-round pick of the Swift Current Broncos. While with the Regina Pat Canadians U18 AAA team this season, Heward had four goals and five assists in seven games.

Quietest trade deadline in memory passes

With the WHL quietly announcing the trade deadline at 10:30 AM mountain time on Thursday, the deadline passed just as quietly without a single trade being completed before the 1:00 PM mountain time deadline. Last season there were 12 deals at the deadline, and in the 2015-16 season, there were only seven trades made on the regular deadline day of January 10th.

Raiders add McDonald to coaching staff

Former forward Ryan McDonald (306GP, 97G, 89A with Regina and Prince Albert ’03-’09) has joined the Prince Albert Raiders coaching staff as an assistant coach. McDonald was originally a 2003 WHL Draft pick of the Brandon Wheat Kings in the second round. McDonald was named the inaugural head coach for the Warman Wildcats U18 AAA team for the 2020-21 season. He served as the bench boss for the U15 AA Wildcats for the previous three seasons in Warman.

Silvertips announce training camp roster

The Everett Silvertips announced their training camp roster for the 2020-21 season. Of note, three players remain with their AHL clubs, Dustin Wolf, Gage Goncalves, and Gianni Fairbrother. Also, 20-year-olds Dawson Butt (155GP, 19G, 20A) and Ty Kolle (197GP, 45G, 41A with Portland, Lethbridge, Regina, and Everett) are not on the roster. This leaves defenseman Gianni Fairbrother, and forwards Ethan Regnier, and Cole Fonstad as the team’s three overage players.

Oil Kings ditch radio broadcast

With teams such as the Portland Winterhawks and Swift Current Broncos giving without a radio broadcast deal a try, the Edmonton Oil Kings are the next team to give it a shot. Oil Kings broadcasts will only be available via the team’s website or on the WHL’s website this season.

Swift Current has since switched back to being on the radio this season. They’ll be on The Eagle 94.1 fm in Swift Current.

Toder on the move in Junior A
