This day in Rebels history – March 21

1997 – overtime magic

Following a series-opening win against the Regina Pats on March 20, the Rebels wanted to open up a 2-0 series lead before heading to Regina for games three and four.

The Rebels opened the scoring early as future NHLer Terry Ryan got the team on the board just 2:02 in. The Pats replied quickly and often, opening up a 3-1 lead before the end of the first period.

The home side would not be denied in the second period as they scored three times while not allowing a single goal by the Pats. Terry Ryan had his second, Martin Tomescek and B.J. Young scored the other goals.

Regina was able to tie the game at four with eight minutes to play in regulation.

Red Deer did not want the extra frame to go long and it showed as Greg Schmidt scored his second goal of the playoffs just 1:06 into overtime.

Mark Magliarditi made 29 saves to give the Rebels a 2-0 series lead heading into Regina.

2003 – opening game shutout

In 2002-03 the Rebels were the top seed in the Eastern Conference. This meant they got the eighth seed, which just happened to be their rivals to the south, the Calgary Hitmen. 42 points separated the two teams in the final standings.

Early on it was all Red Deer as they opened up a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old. Rory Rawlyk and Boyd Gordon both scored their first goals of the playoffs.

The rest of the game saw the Hitmen chase goals while the Rebels held them off defensively. Calgary managed just 24 shots on goal, 13 of them coming in the final 40 minutes.

Cam Ward earned the shutout with 24 saves. Calgary netminder Joel Martin made 25 saves in the loss.

2010 – back to back shutout losses

The Rebels and Blades played Game 2 of their opening-round playoff series.

Red Deer ran into a very hot goaltender as Steven Stanford made 33 saves, leading Saskatoon to a 4-0 victory. It was the second straight shutout win for Stanford and the Blades.

Saskatoon had a 3-0 lead before the game was five minutes old and current Rebels goaltending coach Kraymer Barnstable made his WHL playoff debut. He stopped 17-of-18 Blades shots in 55:24 of action.

The two teams combined for 142 penalty minutes. Five players were assessed game misconduct penalties as the Blades erupted over a late charging major to the Rebels Josh Cowen.

2015 – season wind down

Heading down the stretch of the 2014-15 season the Rebels were locked into the third seed in the Central Division. They met the Edmonton Oil Kings for the final contest of the season.

The Rebels and Oil Kings traded first period goals to the tune of two aside. Preston Kopeck and Adam Musil each tallied for Red Deer.

Unfortunately for Red Deer, that was all the offense they could muster. Edmonton scored once more, almost seven minutes into the second period and the goal by Mads Eller proved to be the game-winner.

Rylan Toth made 35 saves in the loss.
