Rebels issue statement on Westerner Park Challenges

Due to financial challenges, the City of Red Deer has taken temporary control of Westerner Park, home of the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels, to help the organization regain financial stability. As part of the process, Westerner Park will be reviewing contracts related to key major events to ensure they are financially viable. In a statement, the Rebels say they have been assured by the city that business will continue as usual and that positive improvements will be made to the guest experience in the near future.

This also means there is no jeopardy to the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships being held in Red Deer and Edmonton.

Farkas back on sidelines

After a short return to the Victoria Royals lineup, Shane Farkas was listed as a scratch again as the Royals took on the Saskatoon Blades.

Robins a late scratch for Saskatoon

Tristen Robins was a late scratch for the Saskatoon Blades against Victoria. No word on what kept him out of the lineup.

Sillinger leaves game with an injury

Medicine Hat Tigers rookie Cole Sillinger left Tuesday’s game against the Swift Current Broncos with an upper-body injury. Parker Gavlas is expected to return to the lineup after being out on Tuesday.

Huo out for Americans

Sam Huo was not in the lineup for the Tri-City Americans on Tuesday night for undisclosed reasons.

Americans recall Andregg, Feenan, and Melnyk

The Tri-City Americans recalled forward Rhett Melnyk and defensemen Bryson Andregg and Ben Feenan. Melnyk comes from the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers Midget AAA in the AMHL where he has 11 goals and 14 assists in 27 games. Andregg was recently signed by the Americans from the CSSHL’s Delta Hockey Academy where he’s notched two goals and one assist in 12 games. Feenan plays for the CSSHL rival Yale Hockey Academy tallying three goals and 14 assists in 25 games.

Oil Kings recall Henderson from AMHL

The Edmonton Oil Kings have recalled Jayden Henderson from the Red Deer Chiefs Midget AAA of the AMHL. The 16-year-old forward has 16 goals and 25 assists in 28 AMHL games this season.

Hurricanes blueliners dominate CHL Team of the Week

Lethbridge’s Calen Addison and Alex Cotton have been named to the CHL Team of the Week along with Portland’s Seth Jarvis have been named to the CHL Team of the Week. Jarvis (4 G, 5A) and Addison (0 G, 9 A) both finished the week with nine points while Cotton was close behind with two goals and five assists for seven points.

Cougars unveil Suits Up jerseys

The Prince George Cougars revealed the baby blue jerseys they will be wearing for their WHL Suits Up to Promote Organ Donation jerseys this Friday.

Warriors also unveil Suits Up Jerseys

The Moose Jaw Warriors also unveiled their Suits Up jerseys on Tuesday which feature the classic Hockey Night in Canada logo.

Hurricanes to induct Peacock and Ritchie into Wall of Fame

Shane Peacock (336 GP, 108 G, 258 A with the Lethbridge Hurricanes from 1989-1994) and Byron Ritchie (231 GP, 131 G, 166 A with the Lethbridge Hurricanes from 1993-1997) will be inducted into Lethbridge’s Wall of Fame in a ceremony next month.

  • Medicine Hat’s Garin Bjorklund recorded his first WHL shutout.
  • Tri-City’s Bryson Andregg and Rhett Melnyk made their WHL debuts.
  • Victoria’s Matthew Hodson played his first WHL game.

Saretzky commits to Eagles

Alec Saretzky, a 2017 eighth-round pick of the Vancouver Giants, has committed to the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles for the 2020-21 season.

McMillan signs a one-year extension in Germany

Carson McMillan (271 GP, 57 G, 84 A with the Calgary Hitmen from 2005-09) has signed a one-year contract extension with Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven in Germany. Through 40 games this season he has five goals and eight assists.

Persson signs in Sweden

John Persson (200 GP, 63 G, 67 A with the Red Deer Rebels from 2009-12) has signed with Brynas Gavle in Sweden for the rest of this season as well as next season. Persson scored 10 goals and added five assists in 39 games with SaiPa Lappeenranta before being released.

Ahl released in Sweden

Filip Ahl (54 GP, 28 G, 20 A with the Regina Pats in the 2016-17 season) has been released by BIK Karlskoga after potting 17 goals and 23 assists in 40 games this season. Word on the street is the release was by mutual agreement.

Three Stars of the Night

First Star: Medicine Hat’s Carson Hopwo had two goals and two assists

Second Star: Saskatoon’s Martin Fasko-Rudas recorded a natural hat-trick in 2:20

Third Star: Edmonton’s Riley Sawchuk posted two goals and one assist.

Honourable Mentions

Medicine Hat’s James Hamblin had a goal and three assists. Edmonton’s Vladimir Alistrov had two goals.
