This week in the Windy City: A look at the Hurricanes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are coming off a 1-0-0-1 weekend and are getting set for a trip out east. They opened the weekend on Friday night by welcoming the Brandon Wheat Kings for the first time this season.

Week in Review

Brandon came to Lethbridge in the midst of their seven-game road trip, and while they gave the Hurricanes a good battle, it was the home team that came out on top 5-2. Lethbridge received goals from five different players. Dino Kambietz, Jett Jones, Dylan Cozens, Oliver Okuliar, and Joe Arnsten all tallied in the win. Carl Tetachuk was dialed in, making 25 saves.

Saturday night saw the archrival Tigers come to town. Medicine Hat came in having lost back-to-back divisional games. The game started brightly for the Hurricanes, but the Tigers would not go away. They completed the comeback in a shootout for the 3-2 win. Once again, Carl Tetachuk was brilliant, keeping his team in this one with 41 saves in the losing effort. The loss halted the Windy City’s six-game winning streak.

Road Trip

The Hurricanes now get set to head out on the road. The team will head east to Manitoba. On Wednesday, they will stop for their first visit to Winnipeg since the franchise relocated as they get set to take on the ICE. Those same two teams will battle again on Friday night before the Hurricanes move on to Brandon for a date with the Wheat Kings Saturday to end the three-game trip.

The local product played tremendously over the weekend, making 66 saves overall in the two games. Tetachuk has raised his game as of late and it shows in his numbers. The CHL released the top save percentages amongst goalies across the three leagues, and Tetachuk finds himself at sixth on that list at .929. Tetachuk’s play also earned him the number one star in Saturday’s game.

Coach Brent Kisio praised his netminder after the weekend’s action. “He was outstanding, played really strong, and you know he gave us a chance to win. When a goalie does that for you, you have to find a way to win.”

Milestones

Friday night saw Joe Arntsen slap home his first WHL goal. It was Lethbridge’s fifth goal with just seconds left in the game against Brandon.

Calen Addison finds himself sitting in third all-time in Hurricanes’ defencemen scoring. At 172 career points, he is just four points back of Hurricane legend Brent Seabrook for second on that list. Addison is also 12 assists away from 150 career helpers.

Dylan Cozens is 13 assists shy of 100 career assists.

Ty Prefontaine is just six points away from 50 career points. Known for his defending abilities, it is worth noting he also leads the Hurricanes at plus-12 on the season. Next is Okuliar at plus-10

Shooting the Breeze:

Okuliar is the hottest player on the team right now with points in five straight games, including four goals.

Six Hurricanes players have scored their first WHL goals this season: Joe Arntsen, Jacob Boucher, Jett Jone, Oliver Okulair, Chase Wheatcroft, and Ty Nash.

Koletraine Wilson was named to the CHL team of the week. He had one goal and four assists in three games played during the week.
