The hurdle was big, but so was the motivation and fighting spirit. The ÖEHV selection fought courageously for the quarter-finals.
However, after a double strike by the Americans in the first third, they were quickly 0:2 behind, conceded 0:3 right at the start of the second third and 0:4 in the 32nd minute. Simeon Schwinger gave hope again with his goal in the 37th minute, but the defending champions didn’t allow any more. With 1:4, Austria finished the World Cup in 6th place in Group A and 11th place overall.
Head coach Roger Bader: “Of course we hoped that we would be able to pull off a surprise today. It was of course clear that everything had to come together and fit for that to happen. The USA has a high quality with many NHL players. Unfortunately, such chances are sometimes possible. The 1:4 is a result that corresponds to the relationship between the two teams. In the end, we did well.”
Peter Schneider: “It’s incredibly difficult against teams like that. There’s always a bat in between, you have very little time. It’s a completely different way of defending. It’s great that we created a few chances. I hope that we can take this experience and this momentum with us.”
Vincent Rohrer: “It was special to play this World Cup with Austria in my living room. It was cool. We had our chances today. Against a team like that you need a bit of luck and an incredibly good game. I’m proud of our performance.”
