Xaver Schlager Linked With Serie A Trio as Leipzig Exit Confirmed

Xaver Schlager has been offered to three Serie A clubs ahead of his departure from RB Leipzig, with Roma, Juventus, and AC Milan all reported as targets for the Austrian central midfielder. The Austrian international becomes a free agent when his contract expires on June 30, 2026.

Italian journalist Alessandro Jacobone first reported the approach to the three clubs. The snippet states his contract has already expired, but the RB Leipzig official announcement supersedes that: Schlager chose not to extend and will leave at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Three Italian Clubs in the Frame for Xaver Schlager

SempreMilan confirmed that Schlager has been presented to Milan as a free-agent opportunity, and RomaPress reports he has been added to Roma’s transfer shortlist. Of the three clubs, only Roma will play in the UEFA Champions League next season. Milan and Juventus both missed out on a Champions League place and are set to compete in the UEFA Europa League.

According to TransferFeed, Schlager came close to agreeing a move to Juventus, but that transfer did not go through. The same source lists his estimated most likely transfer value at €6.0M, with a range of €4.0M to €10.0M.

RomaPress also notes that Schlager made 11 appearances and scored two goals, though the season and competition were not specified in the available source text.

A Free Agent With Serie A Options

Schlager, born September 28, 1997, turns 29 this autumn. The Upper Austrian joined Leipzig from VfL Wolfsburg in 2022. According to FootballTransfers, Leipzig paid Wolfsburg a reported €12M for the midfielder at the time. His current estimated transfer value sits between €5M and €6.8M, per the same source.

Arriving as a free agent, Schlager would cost any of the three Italian clubs nothing in transfer fees. That is a meaningful factor for Milan and Juventus, both of whom are rebuilding squads around Europa League budgets rather than Champions League revenue.

Leipzig confirmed the departure themselves. “Xaver Schlager chose not to extend his contract,” the club stated in their official announcement, adding that he will leave at the end of the 2025/26 season. Transfermarkt lists the contract expiry as June 30, 2026, consistent with the club’s own communication.

Schlager is currently representing Austria at the World Cup. His club future beyond the tournament remains open, with none of Roma, Juventus, or Milan having announced any agreement. The free-agent window runs through the summer, giving all three sides time to decide whether to move from shortlist to contract offer once the tournament concludes.
