WHL recap: Spokane continues Regina’s woes in the U.S.; Brandon, Kamloops and Everett emerge victorious

Brandon 3 @Swift Current 2(OT)

The Brandon Wheat Kings (15-7-0-1) and goaltender Logan Thompson showed everyone why the Swift Current Broncos (17-5-2-0) felt it was necessary to trade away so many assets to the Calgary Hitmen earlier Saturday in exchange for Matteo Gennaro and Beck Malenstyn. Neither was in the lineup for them Saturday with Malenstyin being out with an injury and Gennaro not being able to make the trip in time. Without those two, the biggest concern for the Broncos-secondary scoring reared it’s ugly head as both Aleksi Heponiemi and Tyler Steenbergen again found the score sheet but they lost in overtime, at home to the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-2.

Ty Lewis netted the overtime winner 2:49 into the extra session and helped the third-place East Division holders to an important extra point over the team currently standing in front of them.

Stelio Mattheos also had two points for the Wheaties but Thompson was the star, making 46 saves on 48 shots.

Steenbergen opened the scoring in this one, as he pocketed his 32nd of the year by spinning out of the corner and picking a blocker-side spot up high on Thompson.

Brandon got that one back later in the first as Baron Thompson got his stick on a point shot from Braden Schneider and it beat Swift Current netninder Logan Flodell.

The Wheat Kings then got out in front as Caden Dailey drove the net and tapped home a nice feed out of the corner by Mattheos for his second of the year.

Heponiemi then put home a one-timer off a feed from Steenbergen, who had drawn the defense on the power play. This tied things up and we would go to overtime to settle them.

Lewis sped up the ice and beat Flodell over his blocker for the winner a couple minutes into OT, as Swift Current had failed to get one past Thompson on three shots in the extra session.

Swift Current will host Victoria on Wednesday after two tight East Division affairs this weekend. They should be sporting Gennaro in their lineup by then. Brandon will head over to Red Deer for a contest on Tuesday.

Kamloops 4 Prince George 3

The season for the Kamloops Blazers (11-13) has taken a remarkable turn since they dropped their first nine games. It is starting to be quite the story, with netminder Dylan Ferguson taking a trip to the NHL and back. Their story continued Saturday with a tight 4-3 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars (9-12-2-2).

Brodi Stuart was key on Saturday as he helped break a 2-2 tie in the third, by setting up Quinn Benjafield for a goal before netting Kamloops’ fourth goal into an empty net. They would need that as Chance Adrian’s first ever WHL goal cut the deficit back to one with seven seconds left.

Ferguson was stellar for the Blazers, stopping 38 of 41. Tavin Grant stopped 25 of 28 at the other end.

Spokane 7 Regina 3

At this point, the Regina Pats (13-12-2-0) will be in no hurry to break out their passports and leave Canada again. After seeing the WHL Final last year turn when they visited the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Pats lost four of five games on their U.S. Division trip, giving up a total of 20 goals in their last three games.

The latest mis-step came at Spokane Coliseum on Saturday night where the Pats fell behind 5-0 and ended up falling 7-3 to the Spokane Chiefs (13-9-1-2).

Ty Smith had three points for the Chiefs while Zach Fischer, Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Riley Woods, Hudson Elynuik and Eli Zummack each had two. Donovan Buskey was solid in net for Spokane, stopping 20 of 23, earning his third win.

The Chiefs will host another East Division team on Wednesday in the Saskatoon Blades. Regina will stay on the road, but head over to Red Deer for a contest Friday.

Everett 5 Vancouver 2

One night after hometown defenseman Wyatte Wylie netted his first multi-point game in the WHL, he scored his very first goal. The Everett (13-12-1-1) native beat Vancouver Giants (10-12-2-2) goalie David Tendeck in the first, tying the game at one after Tyler Benson had scored for the visitors.

The ‘Tips never looked back and added goals from Gianni Fairbrother, Patrick Bajkov, Riley Sutter and Bryce Kindopp to soar out to a 5-1 lead. They would go onto beat the Giants 5-2 and win their ninth game in 13 chances.

Carter Hart was solid, to the tune of 20 saves on 22 shots in the Everett net.
