Victoria Royals training camp continued yesterday with the first day of the Rookie Camp. Rosters today featured players born in 2001 or 2002, who have been drafted or listed by the Royals, as well as some free agent invitees.
The camp program yesterday featured on ice sessions and practices, followed by three scrimmages. Team Quigley, named in honour of team bus driver Larry Quigley, capped day one with a couple of victories.
Looking comfortable was Luke Mylymok (’01) a 2016 fourth round selection. The University of Minnesota Duluth commit looked strong with great instincts around the net.
Forward Tarun Fizer (’01) looked impressive in this, his second camp. Fizer was recently featured in the WHL’s Next Generation series and the forward looked dangerous at times with a couple of breaks down the wing for chances. The Chestermere, Alberta product hopes to make Royals as a sixteen-year-old and is so far playing up to that challenge.
Royals 2017 third round pick Ty Thorpe (’02) has also showed some offensive ability today. The Brandon, MB native played well on day one of his first rookie camp.
Defenseman Jonny Lambos (’01) of Winnipeg, Manitoba also had an impact at both ends of the ice. The Royals 2016 third round selection showed some offensive flair and a little grit as well.
Rookie camp continues today with goalie sessions in the morning flowed by more scrimmages. Main camp opens Monday, August.28 where NHL drafted Royals Matthew Phillips (Calgary Flames), Scott Walford (Montreal Canadiens), Chaz Reddekopp (L.A. Kings) and Tyler Soy (Anaheim Ducks) will take part before leaving for their respective pro camps.
