From the ice rink in Telfs straight into the Olympic spotlight: Alexander Player worked as ice master at the Winter Games in Milan – and thus ensured perfect conditions in the men’s final between Canada and the USA. The 52-year-old Tyrolean is following in the footsteps of his father Josef Player, who was involved in a total of six Winter Olympics and was considered a luminary in the industry.
Player has been on constant duty in Milan for almost three weeks. Every day from early morning until after midnight, he prepares the ice before and after games and during halftime breaks. “An absolute career highlight,” says the veteran, who works full-time at the Telfs ice rink. The job at Olympia was financially manageable, but an “invaluable experience”. Particularly attractive: Due to the NHL break, numerous superstars are on the ice – and players experience every match up close.
Despite the 14,000 fans in the arena, he wasn’t nervous, but rather “excited.” After 24 years of work, nothing bothers him so quickly. On Monday we head back to Tyrol, where everyday life awaits again with figure skating and hobby players. But players already have the next Olympic bid – 2030 in France – in the back of their minds.
