Squad planning for the coming season continues to progress, meaning the Gamsstadt team can now announce their first new addition this week. Jakob Pecnik is moving from HDD Jesenice to Kitzbühel and will wear the Adler jersey from now on. In addition, Lukas Waschnig is extending his contract and will remain part of the team.
With Jakob Pecnik, another young Slovenian player is coming to Kitzbühel. The 22-year-old striker, born in Laibach, already has three years of Alps Hockey League experience, which he brings with him to Kitzbühel. In the last two years he played for HDD Jesenice, but has now decided on Kitzbühel and Austria. He is now returning to his roots, as his grandfather comes from Bad Eisenkappel in Carinthia. Due to this family connection to Austria, he is a dual citizen and will fly under both the Slovenian and Austrian flags.
His motivation for the move was primarily the team, which is why he agreed without hesitation. “The decision to sign for Kitzbühel was pretty easy for me. I know that Kitzbühel is a good Austrian club with a long tradition,” says Pecnik. He also explains what fascinates him about the club and what he is particularly looking forward to. “In recent years we have met Kitzbühel several times with my previous club Jesenice. Kitzbühel was always a tough opponent with a very high pace, strong forechecking and a great goal threat. That’s why I don’t expect anything different for the coming season. I already know the players from the duels of the last few years, but I’m really looking forward to getting to know them even better and making new friends,” explains the 22-year-old.
“He is a player who brings a lot of energy to the ice, is physically present and has continued to develop at Jesenice over the past few seasons and has been able to demonstrate his potential again and again. We were looking for exactly the type of player like him, which is why we are very pleased that he is coming to Kitzbühel,” explains Vice President Michael Widmoser.
Waschnig stays in Kitzbühel, Bretschneider moves to Innsbruck
Further positive news is Lukas Waschnig’s contract extension. The 21-year-old from Klagenfurt is entering his third season in Kitzbühel. Although last season was marked by a few injuries for him personally and was therefore not perfect, he is looking positively towards the future. “Last season didn’t go according to plan for either the team or me. That makes me even more excited that we can attack again next year,” says Waschnig. He really likes the environment in Kitzbühel, which made the decision relatively easy. “I now feel like I’m in my second home in Kitzbühel. I really like the family environment in the club and the interaction with young players,” added the three-time goalscorer last season.
Vice President Michael Widmoser said about the young attacker: “We are very happy that he is staying in Kitzbühel. He has continued to develop in recent years and has become an important part of the team.”
