After his surprising release from the Grizzlys Wolfsburg, Mike Stewart could potentially return to the ICE Hockey League. As LAOLA1 reports, the Canadian is currently a hot candidate for the coaching position at the Vienna Capitals.
The 53-year-old was released from Wolfsburg’s German ice hockey league at the beginning of March. According to media reports, the decisive factor for this was a negative sporting trend after the Olympic break, which meant that Lower Saxony lost important points in the fight for a good playoff position.
Stewart is no stranger to Austria. As a player and coach, he shaped the EC VSV for years, for which he played for a total of nine seasons and later also worked behind the boards. He also gained coaching experience in today’s ICEHL (formerly EBEL) and is considered a possible candidate for a return to the league due to his past and profile.
After a mixed season, the Vienna Capitals could see changes in the coaching position in the summer. According to LAOLA1, Stewart is therefore being discussed as a possible solution.
