ÖEHV crack Simeon Schwinger: “We are all disappointed!”

Yesterday Austria had to accept a 2:6 defeat in a duel with Germany despite being in the lead. The national team had a lot planned, so they were disappointed afterwards.

Peter Schneider & Co. were on par with the DEB selection for long stretches and took a deserved 1-0 lead through Leon Wallner after exactly 22:22 minutes. But then the momentum changed, Germany initially took a 2-1 lead, used a double majority to make it 3-1 in the final period and then had luck with Manuel Wiederer’s goal, whose cross pass was deflected into the goal by David Maier’s skate to make it 4-1. In the end they had to bow to 2:6 and will face the still unbeaten Finns on Sunday, live on ORF SPORT + at 8:20 p.m.

Head coach Roger Bader: “In the first 30 minutes we were absolutely on track, everything went as we imagined. It was also fine in terms of tactics, structure, combat and play. We now have to be realistic against Finland. They are still unbeaten and have 15 NHL players in their squad. Expecting a win would be presumptuous. But we will do our best, no question about it.”

Simeon Schwinger: “We are all disappointed, we had big plans, we really wanted to win or get points. We can’t let our heads down, we still have two important games ahead of us. Anything is still possible. Now it’s time to recover well, make sure we can sleep and concentrate on Finland. Finland is favorite in this group with Switzerland, so we have to play smart, play our system and play compactly.”
