It would be the return of one of the biggest games in ice hockey history: The 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship could start again with an opening game in the Veltins Arena on Schalke. This would give the legendary event from 2010 a spectacular new edition – this is reported by several German media.
Remembering the magical night of 2010
Back then, the German national team wrote sporting history in front of 77,803 spectators. In the sold-out arena, the DEB team beat the USA 2-1 after extra time and ensured one of the most emotional nights that German ice hockey has ever experienced.
Michael Wolf initially gave Germany the lead before Ryan Carter equalized for the USA. In extra time, Felix Schütz finally scored the much celebrated winning goal and caused the arena to shake.
DEB dreams of a new edition
Now this historic event could have a sequel. As several German media reports, the German Ice Hockey Association is planning to open the 2027 home World Cup again with a game at Schalke. The World Ice Hockey Federation IIHF still has to approve the project, but those responsible are already working intensively on its implementation.
World record and goosebumps atmosphere
The 2010 game was long considered the world ice hockey attendance record. To this day, the game holds the record for the largest ice hockey game in a closed arena, as the roof of the Veltins Arena was closed due to the weather at the time.
It was only a few months later that the mark was surpassed at a college game in the USA. The current world record comes from the 2014 NHL Winter Classic in Ann Arbor with more than 105,000 spectators.
