It was Nick Petersen’s game on Thursday evening in the Heidi Horten Arena in Klagenfurt. The EC-KAC striker shone with six points in the 8-3 home win against Fehérvár. In addition to two goals, the Canadian also recorded four primary assists. This makes the 36-year-old the first player in league history to score six points in a postseason game. So far, five players have managed a 5-point game – the last time was more than 14 years ago.
After just 19 seconds, the 4,400 fans in the sold-out Heidi Horten Arena were able to cheer for the first time: Jan Mursak made it 1-0 after an assist from Nick Petersen. It was hardly foreseeable at the time that the 36-year-old would go on to collect five more points. But in the sixth minute, Petersen also prepared Simeon Schwinger’s 2-1, and just ten minutes later he provided the assist for Jesper Jensen Aabo to make it 3-2.
The second third continued in this key. Just 24 seconds after the restart, the two-time win2day ICE Hockey League champion and the KAC were there again: Petersen served the puck to Thimo Nickl to make it 4:3. A real high-scoring game developed, but Fehérvár was no longer able to counter it. The Hungarians scored all three goals in the first third, after which they could no longer overcome Klagenfurt’s defense.
At this point, Petersen was involved in assisting all four of KAC’s goals. For the fifth goal he was not on the ice for the first time, but at 6:3 in the 30th minute the 36-year-old had his stick in play again – this time even as a goalscorer. Six minutes before the end, Petersen finally completed his brace with a double advantage and made history: For the first time in league history, a player scored six points in a playoff game.
Already five players with five points
Before Petersen’s record game, five points were the highest score in a playoff game – achieved by a total of five players. Frank Banham started in the Salzburg jersey on March 15, 2007, when he even scored five goals in a 9-3 home win against Vienna. On February 22, 2009, Marco Pewal also managed a five-point game (two goals, three assists) in the Red Bulls’ 9-1 win against Jesenice. A year later, on March 21, 2010, Linz’s Bradley Purdie also recorded two goals and three assists in a 6-5 overtime win against Vienna. Just a year and a day later, Vienna Capitals player Marcel Rodman shone with a goal and four assists in a 9-1 home win against Salzburg. Rob Hisey last scored five points with two goals and three assists in Linz’s 8-3 win against Vienna on March 4, 2012.
More than 14 years passed before Nick Petersen not only reached this mark, but also surpassed it – and thus became the sole record holder for the most points in a playoff game.
By the way, the most scorer points in a game is also held by a KAC player: Andrew Kozek recorded an impressive nine points – six goals and three assists – in a 12-0 home win against Zagreb on January 6, 2019.
