The Pioneers Vorarlberg’s last game of the season is history. During the last home game, a long-time ICEHL crack ended his career.
At the age of 38, Daniel Woger is hanging up his skates. The Bregenz native stood on the ice for the ceremonial opening face-off, flanked by Kevin Macierzynski and Daniel Frank. One last time, in front of just over 1,500 fans in the Vorarlberghalle.
For the former winger, it is the end of a long career that began in the professional sector in 2004. In 2004/05 he played in 30 games for EC Dornbirn. He reached the highest level in 2008/09 when he hunted for points with HC Innsbruck. In the coming years, engagements followed in Graz, Vienna, Linz, a one-year stopover at HC Thurgau in the second Swiss league and, most recently, Feldkirch.
Top 20 in the ICE all-time list
The Vorarlberger’s record is impressive: 701 games this season, 254 points – but the winger was denied a title. Remarkable: with his 701 regular season games, the 38-year-old is in 18th place in the ICEHL all-time rankings. When asked about his almost 750 games, including playoffs, Woger told the “Vorarlberger Nachrichten” the following. “It’s just a number, I’m glad I was able to have such a career.” The decision was made after the injury, which limited him to just 22 matches this year: “That was the last point that made me say goodbye.”
But Woger doesn’t rule out a “return” to ice hockey: “Now I need some distance, but I can well imagine helping out in the youth sector or elsewhere.” It is also not out of the question that we will see him on the skates again, albeit in the substructure.
