In the future, EC Bregenzerwald could play in Germany instead of in the Alps Hockey League. According to media reports, the German Ice Hockey Association has already received an official application from Vorarlberg to join the Oberliga Süd.
New step for the Austrian club?
EC Bregenzerwald last played in the Alps Hockey League, but failed early in the pre-playoffs. Those responsible are now apparently considering a sporting restart in Germany, as “Merkur.de” reports.
Discussions within the league
Within the major league, possible entry is assessed differently. The DEB collected mood reports from the current clubs in advance. Critical voices primarily point to the additional travel effort and the fundamental question of what added value an Austrian club would bring to the German league. Promoting young talent was also mentioned as an argument, as the top league is traditionally geared towards the development of German players.
Tilburg as a role model?
A similar model has existed for years with the Tilburg Trappers, who have been playing successfully in the Oberliga Nord since 2015. Whether the EC Bregenzerwald actually dares to move to Germany will be decided in the coming weeks. The final decision lies with the German Ice Hockey Association.
