After the ICEHL final: veteran ends his career!

HC Pustertal has officially confirmed the next departure: defender Adam Almquist is ending his active career. The 35-year-old Swede is hanging up his skates after a long international career.

Great career with NHL and KHL experience

Almquist can look back on an impressive career. The strong offensive defender was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2009 and later played in the NHL. However, the Swede spent most of his career in top European leagues.

Stations in the SHL, KHL, Swiss National League and the DEL shaped the defender’s career. His greatest successes include an SHL title with HV71, the championship with SC Bern in Switzerland and a Calder Cup triumph in the AHL.

Before moving to South Tyrol, Almquist was on the ice for EHC Munich and the Kölner Haie, among others.

Difficult season in Pustertal

Last summer, HC Pustertal signed the veteran with high expectations. Above all, his qualities in building up the game and his international experience should give the defense stability.

Almquist visibly improved over the course of the season and showed his class again and again, especially towards the end, but overall the Swede made too many mistakes. Especially in his own zone, the offensive defender didn’t always act well. In total, Almquist recorded ten points in 24 ICEHL games. In the playoffs another four scorer points were added.

End of career after just one season

Now the Swede’s active career ends after just one season at HC Pustertal. With Almquist, the ICEHL is losing an internationally experienced defender who was active in Europe’s top leagues for many years.
